mandatory reading
This is a fantastic book and should be mandatory reading in seminars on indigenous and American history. Estes writes beautifully to produce a damning account of colonialism that is both provocative and enlightening while rightly also challenging how other historians have written about this history. This is not only the best account of Standing Rock and the Oceti Sakowin, but will be soon be recognized as one of the best volumes in current indigenous scholarship as it centers on Lakota epistemology and memorymaking rooted in the land itself. Estes makes the forces of colonialism and capitalism easy to follow and understand, and he rightly focuses on the future-oriented nature of indigenous, anticolonial resistance. I cannot wait to teach this book and will be recommending it breathlessly for some time.

New information new perspective
I have read so many good books on NA history but mostly by anglos..All good books but this, written by a good writer who is also NA adds much to the story. The entire history of "resistance" is interesting especailly as seen through the eyes of an Indian. Well written, well researched and with great compassion. Highly recommend.j

The best book I have found on the DAPL and modern Indigenous movement/perspective.
I heavily relied upon this book for research and guidance for a law school research paper and found it to be extremely helpful and insightful. I had no prior knowledge of the DAPL or Native American history and culture outside that of what is in Pop culture. This book was incredible, if I could give this review more stars I would.

Excellent book on Native American issues.
Nick Estes wrote a thought provoking history of some of the issues that Native Americans deal with everyday. In this increased era of social awareness, this is a must read.

Interesting, informative and repetitive
Lots of interesting facts relating individuals to events. But it became too much after the 80th repetition of the phrase "colonial imperialism".
