Like a McDonalds Hamburger
I consider myself a somewhat avid reader, and in comparison to the other books I've read I have decided that this is like a McDonalds hamburger. It may be a rather large Big Mac, but there's very little actual meat in it.The book has a nice meaning that is much more secular than some of the reviews might lead you to believe. However, most of the book is Ninah fretting over this or that in an angsty way. I do not say this to devalue the experiences of the character, instead I say this because a large portion of the book is devoted to this inner conflict. I did not feel strongly connected to the main character, so while appreciated, this inner conflict could have been shortened in the way the entire book could have been shortened.I don't mind long books in the least. I read War and Peace when I was in 8th grade, and this book is not even a third of War and Peace's size. I just felt that a better work with the same meanings, ideas, conflicts, and themes could be made in a much shorter fashion that would not repeat itself or try to sentimentalize throughout the story. And that was my main problem with the story, it's sentimentality. Most of the book's appeal for emotion did not interest me greatly. It may help to know that I read this for a report. All in all, the book wasn't bad, it just could have been less sentimental and more meaningful.

I expected more
This book was on a list of the 51 best books from Oprah's book club. I wasn't a fan of it. It was a struggle to keep reading. The characters were pretty well created, but the story line not so much. It's mostly relating events in a crazy religious cult.

Why o' why...
are there so many books that start off great then lose steam just as you are really getting into them????? I really liked the way this book started. It's weird, it's creepy, I was diggin' it. It was an interesting story about a subculture that few of us ever get to see. Then WHAM!! It just stopped. I don't know if I found it to be unbelievable? I don't think so because I know virtually nothing about this populations. It just stopped. Three quarters of the way into the book, I found myself reading it to finish it.I give it three stars because it was a story different from many but the ending was nothing to write home about....

If you must have it then buy it used.
Please don't beleive the hype! Just because it is an OPRAH pick does not mean it is superb. This book is mediocre at best. I don't know where to begin. Like other reviewers the first few pages were interesting and then ...nothing! Dialogue, dialogue, and more dialogue without in depth description or anything else! After 40 odd pages the story doesn't move much. You could literally start in the begginning and open the second half of the book and still know exactly what was going on. The end was a dud! There were NO twists and turns in the plot. The reader already knows that the protagonists will be punished for their "sins" because it has been pounded into his/her head for 200 pages! This book is all quantity and no quality! No wonder the book is selling for ONE cent used on Amazon. Because those who have read it practically want to give the sh*t away.

CAPTIVATING!
This book is eye-opening, especially to those who go to a church that is not"free". We love God and want to please Him, but we are only human, not supernatural as He is. We are taught how to please God in so many different ways. (Depending on which, what kind, of church you go to) This book was written with so much detail and experience. I loved it. I recommend it to be read by anyone and everyone.

The Rapture of Canaan
I am sure this is part if not all of it a true story as how can one come up with what was going on in this book and I gave it to my sister to read and she agreed with me. Hummm We did really enjoy reading this book wow. AND this author has written other books that we have read and enjoy everyone of them.

An astonishing story!
Reynolds writes her prose like it's poetry. You'll want to consume every word. This story is about a young girl surmounting craziness. It's a beautiful story about love.

Full of Truth
I loved the book. There is a lot of truth about the human nature that is interwoven into the story, and it is done in a truly masterful way. I read it front to back in just three days.
