Anybody know if this will accept refillable cartridges from some other company? (are the cartridges clearly an OEM of somebody else?)

If you can get a hold of a syringe (we had them when we had to give our cat meds) you can blunt the needle point & refill the cartridge using bottled ink. Be sure it's ink for fountain pens. Just draw some ink from the bottle, insert the needle into the cartridge & press until it's full.

Does this work with universal converter?

As the universal converter cost close to 2x the price of the pen and this is a low end pen with a high failure rate . ( The one I bought was a waste and never worked at all .) The Concern should not be the converter , the pen most likely won't work with or without a converter . Strongly suggest investing in a Higher Quality pen first . Amazons ratings and reviews are reasonably accurate in guiding your decisions .

Are other brands of refills compatible with this pen? I find it interesting that you charge almost as much for 2 refills as you do for the pen and 2

It's interchangeable with some, but I couldn't tell you which ones. My pen broke and I was able to use the cartridges that came with it in a cheap fountain pen from China, so it's definitely possible.
