Shop Fox W1410 Fence with Standard Rails

I was hesitant to order because I assumed, as the entry level Shop Fox fence, it looked flimsy in the picture. But this is very solid and slides smoothly with one hand and stays square to the blade. I have a 40 year old Craftsman saw and I had been considering upgrading my fence, but it finally broke so I had no choice. I had to drill a few holes to get it lined up right but the included drill and tap worked fine for me. Installation wasn't terribly difficult and it's really a great upgraded to this saw. Very Happy with it.

I replaced the factory fence on my Grizzly with this Shop Fox and what a difference! The original fence worked by "clamping" between the two rails, this one clamps to the angle-iron rail so it works even if the rails are not exact. And when locked it does not shift and stays put. The old fence would often shift slightly when locked since it clamped between the two rails. Since my table was slightly larger than the maximum depth, I had to perform the adjustment shown in the manual which is not clear and takes some time-but once done it worked fine. The extension rails are no longer available, but since this fence uses standard angle-iron it should not be a big deal to fabricate something if necessary. I am considering making a "hinged" extension I can fold out of the way since I have a small shop. I bought this from "Amazon returns" so I got a good deal. The scale was damaged in shipment though, but Shop Fox support is great and they are replacing it for me. Good support is so hard to find these days and I would not hesitate buying another Shop Fox product because they excel in this area.

I will start by saying this is the only game in town for an affordable upgrade on a 27” table saw so for that it gets five stars. I have a old craftsman that had the stock “align-a-rip” fence which is a good name cause you have to align it every rip. I’ll start with the bad. The fence rides on crappy angle iron tracks. That have been ground on one edge and power coated. They are CRUDE, as is most of the manufacturing and general appearance of the fence. I had to file and sand them to get things slide smoothly. The instructions are meh, at best. I guess if your a person who buys this then your 99% likely to be mechanically inclined enough to figure it out. The looks. Sorry but if I was to pick the better of the two, this versus the stock craftsman align-a-rip I’d pick it every time. Extruded anodized aluminum versus crappy powder coated steel. Sorry it’s ugly. Installation could be described as one size fits nothing, maybe there’s a saw it fits but sure not mine. Seems a more adaptable mounting option would make installation much easier. Yes I understand any increase to manufacturing complexity would increase the cost. I had to drill new holes in the tracks, it was an all day job to fit it. The drill bit included is only a bit in form. Of course guess which size bit was missing from my set. I drilled out one size under and finished with the included. It made four holes, barely. The tap actually cut ok and got the job done no problem. Lack of a RH stop for the fence. There is a bumper on the LH rail which I can’t remember the last time I had my fence on the left of the blade so not sure the point of that. It comes with rubber covers for the rails that will fall off and get lost soon enough unless I glue them but the RH will have to be removed every time I have to remove the fence. Guess I’ll just be mindful of the fence sliding off the rails. The fence face itself isn’t flat. It has a concave bow, not enough to effect performance but not precision ground either. It is wood working I understand but as a guy that grew up in a machine shop it’s less than precision, again kinda crude. More Harbor Freight appearance than I expected and I did’t think it looked that great in the pictures. The kit come with some parts that aren’t mentioned in the instructions. Guess I didn’t need those. I’ll have to make a bracket to mount the switch as there’s no provision to attach it to this rail. The good. Solid! Clamps tight and true no muss no fuss. This is why I bought it. People are correct in the reviews it’s a solid, slip free fence that tracks true. Easy to adjust. Getting the fence true and square was super straight forward that part of the design is brilliant and very sturdy. I expect the fence to last till I eventually upgrade to a new higher level saw. Conclusion Did I mention solid and easy to adjust. Be patient installing and tweaking it and you will be rewarded with a serviceable tool that is really a bargain. Yes it isn’t the sexiest thing in my shop but the ability to trust my fence and not have to spend hours fussing about with a slipping, constantly out of true fence makes me happy.

Installation was simpler than expected. Seems to be well engineered and well made. Manual is very helpful. Definite improvement over the old fence. Box was damaged during shipping-a common complaint. The heavy steel angle bars had been pushed through the packaging foam-possible when the box was dropped during shipping and handling. The manufacturer might add thin plywood pieces at the ends of the box to better survive shipping of the heavy box.

I hate to give up. Every time I thought I had solved the problem with the fence being out of square, I'd turn around and it would be out of square again. That's the bad news. The good news is after reading the other comments I took the plunge and bought this fence. Should have done it sooner. I bought a new drill bit and tap, took my time with the installation and had no problems at all. I can't tell you how nice it feels to be able to slide the fence anywhere on the table with no effort and to be able to make micro adjustments to the settings (with the rollers on the bottom of the fence) and to have the cuts be spot on and repeatable. Time is money. Don't waste yours, get this fence now!

The design and finished manufactured fence are high quality. The track rails are angle iron and finish is so-so. I LOVE this upgrade to my table saw. This new fence accurately locks into place and stays in place. It is easy to make fine adjustments; it is what a table saw fence should be. If you need a fence on an old table saw – you will like this one. The instructions on how to install the fence can be misleading. I have a 1975 vintage Craftsman 10” table saw with 27” cast iron tabletop. I still like the saw but have come to the end of my rope with the old inaccurate stock fence which requires tap tap here and tap tap there only to have the fence move out of adjustment when tightening the fence lock (yah, it took me long enough to get sick of the old fence and start a search for a replacement). So, after much research and reading many comments I chose this Shop Fox W1410 Fence and I love it – a major – no, a Nucular Upgrade over the stock fence. This Shop Fox fence is precise and smooth and VERY glad I made the switch. But here are some “things to consider” if you are installing this upgrade on a cast iron table needing new holes to accommodate installation of the fence rails – things I learned from my install experience. 1. The cast iron table saw top MUST measure no more than 27-1/16” (maximum) from front edge to back edge. If you want to install this fence on a top greater then 27-1/16” the Operating Manual (installation instructions) says call Woodstock International Inc., the manufacture of the fence, at (360) 734-3482. I called this number about another issue and never got a call back. My saw top was exactly 27” 2. The Operating Manual (installation instructions) suggests you use an 1/8” drill for pilot holes for the 5/16” tap hole to be drilled in the cast iron. DO NOT use an 1/8” drill – it WILL break and then you have to deal with how to handle drilling out the broken bit or finding a new mounting location for a new hole. Instead I recommend using a 3/16” drill bit, it will not break and quickly drills out the pilot hole – cast iron is easy to drill but has soft and hard areas that can cause intermittent increased torque on the drill bit. 3. When installing the rear rail, the Operating Manual instructs you to place 2 (two) flat washer spacers on the 3/8” mounting bolts between the tabletop and the rear rail. Do not install spacer washers if your tabletop measures 27”. NOTE: these washer spacers are ONLY required IF your tabletop is less than 27”. Then the washers are used as shims to increase the distance between the front and back rails. 4. The front and back fence mounting rails are paint finished 3/16” x 1-1/2” x 1-1/2” cold rolled angle iron. My back rail (leading (horizontal) edge of angle iron leg) was very smooth as the rolling fabrication of the 3/16” x 1-1/2” x 1-1/2” angle did not have mill scale or fabrication inclusions running along this track edge. But my front rail did have quite a bit of scale and fabrication inclusions which resulted in very rough tracking of the installed fence. The two front steel track wheels had a rough ride over the areas where there was mill scale and bumps (fabrication inclusions). To resolve this issue, I used a fine flat metal file to remove the scale, burrs, and bumps making the track edge smooth for the two front metal track wheels to ride on and “Bingo!” The Fence now operated nearly “smooth as silk”, well, smooth as I felt it should. 5. NOTE: The fence rides on two metal track wheels located at the front of the fence and one metal track wheel located at the back of the fence (front of the fence is adjacent the front of the table saw where you stand to feed lumber into the saw blade – back of the fence is adjacent the back of the table saw where lumber exits the saw blade). The front track wheels are mounted +/- 1-15/16” below the fence bottom and the back (rear) track wheel is mounted +/- 1-5/8” below the bottom of the fence. THEREFORE, the front rail MUST be installed (mounted) lower than the back rail to equalize (level) the offset distance between the front track wheels and the back (rear) track wheel as they relate to leveling the bottom of the fence to the table saw surface. 6. Suggest mounting the front and back rails to your cast iron tabletop with 4" C-clamps. I suggest using 6 clamps, 2 for mounting the front rail and 2 for mounting the back rail. Then install the fence according to Operation Manual to verify the fit and operation of the fence over the tabletop. as you begin to roll the fence over the table top you will run into the first C-clamp on both the front and back track. Use C-clamp 5 to secure the front rail behind the fence and use C-clamp 6 on the back rail behind the fence allowing you to remove the front and back clamps preventing the fence from continuing travel across the table saw top. This will allow verification of the operation of the fence prior to drilling mounting holes in the cast iron tabletop. This will allow fine adjustment of the rail placement to assure smooth operation and necessary clearance between the fence and the tabletop as the bottom of the fence is to glide 1/16" above the surface of the tabletop. I was looking for a good fence for my older Craftsman table saw and the prices for good fences are very high (at least for me). So when I saw this on Amazon and based on the low price I bought one. It arrived quickly and installation was pretty easy. It was easy to adjust and so happy I bought this. I'm a little disappointed this item is listed as discontinued on the Woodstock International web site so future support if needed might be a problem. Lastly the owners manual is not easy to follow so I had to go through it several times to understand some of the steps for installation and adjustments.

I purchased this back in January to replace the pitiful fence on my old Craftsman Table Saw. I didn't get around to installing it until today. Got my rails mounted - all good. Then following the instructions, I put the fence on the rails - all good. Then I attempted to test lock the fence into position and it did not lock. Looking back at the instructions, I see that the "lock handle actuates and hold the clamping jaws when in the engaged position and releases the jaws in the up position. This handle is already adjusted for use out of the box." Further investigation (see pictures) revealed that neither the front or rear "locking jaws" were installed on the fence. I then searched through the installation hardware that came with the Shop Fox W1410 Fence and found (1) locking jaw.....not (2) locking jaws. I spent the better part of an hour trying to figure out how to install the one jaw, but no luck. This has rendered the fence unusable. Can I somehow get some help with this from the seller? I think the fence will be good and I don't want to return it, I just need a functional fence with all of the working parts installed.

I installed this fence on my old Craftsman table saw and the installation was quite simple and the fence works great. ***Packaging*** Mine had a rough shipment; there was a puncture in the side of the box, all of the bracing styrofoam inside was shattered, and the parts were scattered all around. Fortunately, nothing was missing or damaged. It just didn't look good. ***Installation*** This fence is made to work on table saws with a depth (front to back) of 27±1/4". Fortunately, my saw was exactly 27". If you're saw has a smaller-than-suggested depth, you can just add some spacers. If it's larger, you might be hooped. The instructions are quite thorough and easy to read. Despite that, I made a mistake the first time installing the rails and mounted BOTH at 1/16" below the mitre slots. In reality, that's true only for the front rail and the back rail should be 1/16" below the table top. The included drill bit and tap for mounting the rails is a courteous inclusion, but they're of poor quality. That said, anyone installing a custom fence on their table saw probably has proper drill bits (5/16") and a tapping set (3/8" USS). Once the rails were installed, the fence slid on easily from the end of the rails. Adjusting for parallelism with the mitre slots was easy, and once adjusted, both sides of the fence appeared parallel to the mitre slot. The included measuring tape that sticks onto the front rail seems kind of cheap. Not an issue for me, but it's imperial only, not metric. It was easy enough to install though, and works as it should. Aftermarket ones are easy enough to obtain. ***Operation*** The fence moves down the rails fluidly and with ease. The build quality is great; everything feels very solid and sturdy. It stays square and in the same position as it's being locked down. I like the inclusion of the T-slot on top of the fence for adding additional equipment. I have a few minor gripes about the fence though. (1) The locking handle requires a fair amount of force to lock down (it's not extreme, but more than I would like). I believe this can be adjusted, but I suppose I prefer the feeling of having a very secure fence.(2) the viewing glass above the tape measure is raised about 1/4" above the rails. This means you have to be looking directly over the glass to accurately read the tape measure. And (3) aesthetically it does leave something to be desired, and it does look a little "cheap" in my opinion. Probably just because it doesn't have a big brand name scribed across it. Like I said though, this is a great fence and worth every penny in my books. Would highly recommend it. A quality product for a great price.

Took a bit longer to install than I expected, likely due to age of my saw. But fence works very well and I’m extremely satisfied with the quality for this price.

Arrived well packaged (but a lot of styrofoam). Well built and sturdy. Instructions are pretty good, but not perfect. Few minor details that they weren't clear about that I had to find out by trial and error (low profile bolts are for the back rail by the way). A few more pictures may have helped. It would have been smoother if it had fit on my existing bolt holes, but the back rail is mounted higher on the table than the front so had to drill new holes for that back rail. Once finally installed, it worked brilliantly. Really happy with the end product.

Used on a 1988 table saw that I just refurbished. Only used the "Fence" out of this package, made my own rails to cover the extra wide table top. The fence locks down square right out of the box, glides easy on the rails, Great Quality.

I love the way the FENCE moves so smooth and EFFORTLESS. I LOVE the way it locks in and you get perfect SQUARE CUTS. I am very PLEASED with this PURCHASE t's A-1 in my book.
