I got Fast Results
After 15 years of PPIs that didn’t really work, as I still suffered at night, I read this book and downloaded the app to use the food chart. I got off cold turkey from the PPI, and in a few days, having eliminated some of the main culprits that caused my reflux, I was feeling better than I ever felt in a long time. I continued to eliminate foods that made my reflux reappear. Replacing regular sugar with safe sugar was the first big change. I only eat monkfruit sugar and if that’s not around I eat Erythritol…both 100% safe and 0 calorie. If that’s not around or I can’t get stevia when I’m outside I opt for an artificialSweetener. I replaced my dairy with plant based for cereal and lactose free…it’s the sugars in the dairy that cause the reflux. So for coffee the suggested creamers or evaporated milk is harmless too. To battle constipation I eat a lot of my favorite vegetables and do eat whole wheat breads or multi grains..and do have Metamucil at night..I don’t eliminate as much fiber as he suggests and I do take a probiotic supplement that he suggests…I replaced my high fiber cereal with a combo of his low FP suggestions and bran so I don’t get constipated. I don’t follow his diet it’s unnecessary and I do t eat meat or chicken anyway. I had to get rid of grapefruit juice and cranberry juice. I am also careful with beans and lentils…those are high FP but I keep it at small portions and not every day. His chart is on target. Moderation in everything is key. I also watch the carbs and get breads that are as low as possible in carbs and notice a big difference. I wish doctors would prescribe eliminating harmful foods and moderation instead of quick fixes and pills

Making a lifestyle change is do-able and can solve the LPR problem
I was diagnosed with LPR (Laryngopharyngeal Reflux) in mid-August when I went to an ENT for sore throat that had been hanging on since at least last spring. I sing with a church choir and a community choir, and I was afraid that my sore throat and hoarseness was going to be the end of my singing. The doctor scoped my throat and said all was well except the redness in my throat/vocal cord area. No nodules or lesions or anything. He gave me a prescription for Prilosec to take for 6 weeks twice a day. I had taken Prilosec 7 or 8 years ago when I weighed 75 more pounds than I do now. I had bad heartburn then and trouble swallowing, etc. Had an endoscopy done by gastroenterologist. He said I had a hiatal hernia. He put me on Prilosec and I stayed on it until 6 months after I re-joined Weight Watchers. At that point I had lost about 50 pounds and found that I didn’t need the Prilosec any more. I have stayed on Weight Watcher program, now maintaining for over 6 years. As I progressed with Weight Watchers I began to see the benefits of the whole foods approach of their Simply Filling program and had given up most processed foods long ago. I was really surprised when the doctor said acid reflux in my throat. After taking the Prilosec for a couple of weeks, I started reading everything I could find on the internet about LPR. What I found was a huge variety of conflicting opinions about the causes and cures of LPR. The first thing I saw was the bad effects of the PPIs. I read that they really only addressed the symptoms but not the cause. I quit taking the Prilosec after two weeks. Then I started reading that LPR could be beaten by cutting carbs. At that point I had also heard suggestions from my doctor about all the things I should quit, including caffeine and acidic foods like tomatoes, oranges, etc. I was also told to quit smoking, but I had never smoked in my life. I was not overweight. I had mostly given up processed foods as a member of Weight Watchers. I started cutting carbs and everything else that was mentioned, but it was like a shotgun approach without focus. Then I read Dr. Robillard’s Fast Tract Digestion book and decided this was something do-able. I have been following the program for 3 weeks now and most days have no sore throat at all. I still have some hoarseness, and my doctor said that part does take longer to heal. I wanted to continue following my Weight Watcher program as much as possible. The carbs that I was taking away for FTD weren’t anything I was required to have. The first week was tough. I couldn’t believe I was weighing lettuce. I chose not to eat the recipes and meal plan in the book because they included a lot of things that I gave up a long time ago and didn’t want to go back to them. Instead I used the food charts to figure out the FP numbers on the food that I normally eat and stayed within the 30 point guideline for the first week. Moved up to 40 points the second week since I was having such good results. Now I am trying to stay under 45 and have succeeded most days. The first thing I noticed was that all the flatulence I used to deal with went away. That was an unexpected bonus. I have pretty much gotten rid of the throat pain since starting the diet. As is typical of LPR, I tend to reflux in the daytime when I’m up and about, not at night. I have not had heartburn since i lost over 70 pounds as a Weight Watchers member. The only problems I've had with reflux since I started Fast Tract Digestion was some throat reflux as a result of very strenuous exercise. I am 71, 5'4" tall, and 134 pounds, and in good health, taking no prescription meds except raloxifene for bones. My husband and I have one hike that we regularly do near home. It is short and can be done in an hour, but the first 3/4 mile is loose rock and pretty much straight up, gaining 550′ of elevation in that distance. I always have a runny nose and much throat mucous and resulting sore throat when I do this hike. This is not a problem with the diet. I think I just have to work out how much exercise is strenuous enough to cause reflux and cut back some. I had one other problem the other day. Part of Robillard's plan is to avoid eating large volumes, better to have smaller meals more often. I ate a really big hamburger patty, no bun. I very seldom eat beef, let alone large servings. I had sore throat and discomfort for several hours. Lesson learned.Counting this book, I have read 4 books concerning LPR. To my mind this is the only one that offered a sensible approach. When I went back to my doctor for follow-up, I told him about this plan and even showed him the food trackers to show him what I had been eating. He said he had no doubt that people could solve the problem with LPR through diet. The only problem as he could see it was that only about 2% of the people would do it. This program is not that hard to do. Surely following the plan is better than taking prescription meds with bad side effects.

Getting Help for LPR without medication!
I like that I finally got some answers about my symptoms and how to help them without taking medication and getting side effects. I also like how the doctor included some information on reaching out to him for further support. It looks easy to follow by adjusting what I eat.

Poor scientific basis
This book may have some good ideas and possible explanations, but the author is so keen to ignore anything that disagrees with him that it undermines the whole book. He repeatedly talks about how his approach has been tested (on about 9 people, and nothing was done to counteract the placebo affect) but says there is little evidence on the health benefits of fibre (when I easily found studies based on thousands of people showing significant benefits to eating fibre). I would be wary of following the diet long term when it is based on minimal scientific grounding and when it recommends removing beneficial for items like fibre from the diet. As I say, there are some interesting possibilities such as dietary imbalances and intolerances causing increased gas, but there seemed to be very little in the way of investigation to see if that is actually the case. If a more rigourous scientific approach had been taken then it might have some beneficial insights, but as it stands out is pretty much pseudo-science.

THIS WORKS - EXCELLENT! If you have heartburn a must read.
I don't know how anyone can complain about this book! This absolutely works. I also bought the Fast Tract app which helped tremendously. I had raging Heartburn and thought I could cure it by just eating greens and protein - WRONG - then came across this book. Sure it's geared to the American market, in terms of food choices, but If I managed to work with it, anyone can. It took me two weeks to get rid of the reflux - the doctor gave me lansaprazole for a month and that took two weeks but look at the long term affects of taking a PPI! And I didn't feel great while I was taking it. If you're serious about improving your health buy the app as well - have it for two weeks and you'll know how to manage your diet. I shall be forever grateful to Norman for his wisdom - THANK YOU big time!

This is only my third week and I feel so much better. I even showed it to my GP who ...
I don't normally write long reviews but this book has been life changing. It has worked for me! I don't have the symptoms of acid reflux anymore after suffering with them for months, even on medication. This is only my third week and I feel so much better. I even showed it to my GP who encouraged me to continue "if it's working and approaching this in a sensible manner." If your medication isn't working consider giving this a go. It's a two week alteration to your diet and then careful monitoring for a few weeks but it was worth it for me. After 3 days my symptoms had all but disappeared. The first half of the book is an explanation of his theory, (he is a microbiologist who had heartburn/acid reflux). The explanation and science behind the theory is easy to understand (I didn't concentrate on the diagrams). Yes the recipes are written for an American audience but these can be adapted/converted using the internet to help. I make constant use of the food index at the back of the book. I now know what foods to avoid in the initiate period whilst my gut bacteria is sorting itself out.

Persevere with this diet it does bring improvement
I made slow initial progress with this heartburn diet and had to re-read the book a few times to make sure I was doing it correctly. It's a completely different way of thinking about food, so it required some commitment. The book is encouraging, as are other people's reviews and Norman Robillard's website. I was determined to stick to it, as have had all the major symptoms of heartburn for months and I did not respond to PPi's.I wouldn't say I have conquered heartburn yet, I still have some difficulty with my throat and swallowing, but I have significantly improved abdominal pain, and it feels like things are moving in the right direction - and the book has suggestions on other ways to eliminate heartburn so I will now try these too. I've done 3 weeks on the diet (strictly no cheating) and it is beginning to feel like a balanced way of eating. I understand now why the large volumes of vegetables, fruit, wholegrains and legumes that I used to eat are problematic for me.This diet would be difficult if you were a strict vegetarian. I was mostly vegetarian but would eat some meat. This diet has made me eat more meat, fats and fish. The only down-side I would say is trying to get the info from Kindle App - you can't print it out - so the recipes are difficult to use in the kitchen when you're cooking. In this instance a good old paperback would have been easier! To summarise I would say persevere with this diet if it doesn't work instantly. A lot of the reviews say it works in a few days but this didn't happen for me. It was very up and down for a number of weeks, but then enough improvement to encourage me to continue!!

A must read for those suffering with reflux
This book has helped me immensely with a very stubborn case of silent reflux, both in understanding what is going on, and the many symptoms connected with it, and with practical ways to help yourself that are much more effective than the usually prescribed and potentially harmful drugs. Recommended.
