Are the relays built in ?

No. This switch box does not have any built-in relays.

What is the actual gauge of the input and output wires? The description only says "heavy gauge" which could be anything.

For the 6 switch version, there are two 12 AWG input wires, each supplying power to three switches with 14 AWG output wires. Hope this helps.

How do you fuse the 12-gauge red wires coming from the battery if they are only rated for 20 amps Max but the Box itself is rated for 40 amps ?

12 gauge wire can withstand a load much higher than 20A @ 12V DC considering the length of wire needed from the dash to the battery isn't that long. Note that each switch is rated at a maximum of 20A with each circuit (3 switches) rated at a maximum of 40A. Hope this helps.
