I rarely write a review but decided to. First, I am old, like dirt. Retired as a system, network, cyber engineer a long, long time ago. How old? I started with Assembly language and the OSI model. LOL.I still enjoy playing with computer stuff though.I don't use these drives in a NAS but do use the IronWolf drives for my media server (recently rebuilt on a mini pc) from the old tower which I keep as a backup. I really like these drives. They can run 24x7 or on/off, depending on the system. I use them as my backup media across my desktops, laptops and servers via 6e wifi and also direct attached. They hang off external USB to SCSI enclosures and run like a charm.Well, so much for the background. The first three I bought in 2021. The next in 2022, another in 2023 as a replacement and now an IronWolf Pro just ordered as another replacement (7200RPM!) a few minutes ago.Real world experience is simply this. As of today, the last one bought in 2021 is showing signs of file corruption. Nothing major, but definitely getting some bad blocks. I scanned the drive and repaired it, but in my world, it is either perfect or replaced. Sure, they could probably go for another year, but I don't want the hassle. And for a few extra details. The drives did all not get the same usage. Some have one year, other three years. The one-year usage ones are running great, the three-year ones are showing errors.My conclusion? The IronWolf drives are great for the money. Whether in an on/off environment or 24x7, they give a solid three years of great performance and reliability.I decided to buy the IronWolf Pro 4TB running at 7200RPM for a little extra spin for those Ultra 4K movies. It was only 20 dollars more.They get my vote, just plan a three-year endurance unless you are running a NAS. Then it is not that big a deal. Enjoy!PS: I was going to buy SSD's, but with the crazy price increases since the first of the year, I'll stick with HDD's. They work great for my purposes.

I held off on submitting a review until I had a chance to put some time and usage on this hard drive. I ordered 3 of IronWolf 4TB hard drives in January 2021 and use them in a RAID 5 configuration on an Asustor AS4004T NAS. They have been in use for about 13 months. It is used in a home office setting with me as the sole user. I also use the Asustor Surveillance Center app to record 24/7 security camera footage to these hard drives. After 13 months of use, the drives have performed with no issues.The drives run quiet and cool, but keep in mind that this is due to the disks only spinning at 5900 RPM. Consequently, you'll need to manage your expectations on the read and write speeds to these disks, even if they are in a RAID configuration.I did check the serial numbers on the drives that I received on the Seagate website to confirm if these drives are covered by Seagate, and my drives had warranty periods as follows:Drive #1, Date of Manufacture: 3DEC2020; Warranty valid until 28MAR2024Drive #2: Date of Manufacture: 2DEC2020; Warranty valid until 28MAR2024Drive #3: Date of Manufacture: 2DEC2020; Warranty valid until 28MAR2024Considering that I bought these drives in January 2021, these drives are practically fresh off the manufacturing line and haven't stayed in Amazon's inventory very long. However, those warranty periods don't appear to be in line with Seagate's claim of a 5-year warranty for these drives. Just wanted to point this out for those who are expecting a 5-year warranty on this particular model.Overall, there have been no issues with these drives. Expectations just need to be managed, considering that these disks only spin at 5900 RPM. Otherwise, they have performed reliably under the workload conditions I described.

Bought 2 initially. Been using for a few months for storage of large media files in a NAS. No issues so far. Since these drives are supposed to last for years, can't say much on reliability which honestly is the MOST IMPORTANT thing in a hard drive.Couple of things: These drives "sleep" and can take a few seconds to spin up and start to read/write and you can hear them when they do. It's not like they are bad or anything, but just know they can make some noise and if you don't do anything on them, they sleep. After they wake up, they are quiet and work nicely. It's not an NVMe SSD. Don't expect that kind of performance but they are pretty fast.. These drives are for reliability and capacity and are able to stay on and read/write for years. They are perfect for a small NAS. I will be buying more soon so I can start to do RAID and increase capacity as well.

I own a 4 drive QNAP NAS and typically need to replace a drive about once a year. I only use the 4TB IronWolf drives and in general, have had no issues. I can hot swap on my NAS, so installation is a breeze. My latest purchase was to replace a 4.3 year old IronWolf drive, which just began to show bad sectors. My experience has been that the life of these drives has been from 2 to 5 years running 24/7 on a NAS.I noted Fresh Stock in my headline since it's important for warranty. Unlike typical warranties which are based on purchase date, Seagate warranties are based on manufacture date which I believe is typically set for about 3 years and 3 months for this drive. This purchase and my last from Amazon both showed warranty dates that were just under the 3 years and 3 months. I've previously purchased drives from another vendor and the warranties were only about 2 1/2 years remaining. I did have one of those drives go bad just before the 2 1/2 years were up, so was able to get a replacement.For warranty, I had to send back the defective drive and was sent a re-certified drive. Process is not quick, so I ended up purchasing a replacement first and kept the re-certified drive on the shelf ready for replacement. For some, returning the defective drive may not be a viable option depending on the data stored on it and whether or not you can actually get the drive wiped. Some may also be concerned with using a re-certified replacement drive, but that likely depends on how you're using. In my Raid 5 configuration, it's not an issue for one drive to go bad as long as I quickly get it replaced.

I needed a new archive drive for my machine as the current one was reaching 11 years. As a western digital green drive, anyone in IT can tell you thats an amazing feat for the little guy. None the less I decided to swap for a new seagate drive as they had been pretty reliable in my sever setting for raid setups. The drive operates just as expected if not a bit slower than the old one but not abnormally slow for a massive drive at 5.9k rpm and only 64 mb or cache. The issue is its loud, concerningly loud. It sounds like the head is hitting the spindle sometimes when it wakes up.Pros:1. large capacity for a very good price2. CRM style drive with traditional memory cells instead of shingled cells (just know that shingled media is slow)Cons:1. only 5900rpm2. only 64 MB of cache3. loud on wake upConclusion:Though slower drives can mechanically last longer, often damaged is caused by the head rather than the spindle. This leads to the noise issue which sounds like the head is crashing against the drive on wake up. Despite these noises the drive operates fine and reports no errors. I can only assume this is just how large seagate drives act. The final thing that makes this hard to recommend is its tiny 64 MB of cache, cache can speed up reads and writes to drives and the bigger the drive the bigger the cache you want to help buffer that reaction time of the mechanical parts of the drive.I cant suggest this drive to anyone as an archive... with noise issues, and cut down cache... it just sets it over the top. A lot of us dont want to be concerned about performance or longevity as soon as we open up a new drive and back up to it. Try and find something else if you can.

This is the 10th 4TB drive I have gotten from Amazon. The Ironwolf line of NAS specific hard drives are always just what I expect and pay for. I have only had one drive fail and it wasn't purchased from Amazon but rather came with the NAS I salvaged from the clinic my wife worked at.Let's talk about availability first. These drives are available at the fulfillment center in Shakopee MN. That is 5 hours away so depending on the day I order they almost always make it in two days. They come in excellent packaging that is minimal and still provide solid protect for the drive.The drives themselves install quickly and easily in my Synology system. I recently purchased a 5 bay expansion unit for my DS1019. Both units use tool less trays with snap in pieces to hold the drive in place and then slide into the unit. I then expand my volume and let it go to work.There are always question about noise level and so on. To tell the true I never think about it. My Synology units are setup in the basement the coolest area of the house and as I continue remodeling down there the set up will get cooler and any noise is low.I chose the 4TB because of the below $100 dollar price point and because it fits my storage needs. While 8, 10 and upwards of 20TB drives have more space the price point is a hit if you are on a budget. The 4TB is the sweet spot.I will continue to purchase this product as I will always need more drives and they are just what I need. I highly recommend them.

So far I'm really happy with these drives. They run cool and quite in my NAS. With the slightly higher RPM they are a little snappier. The Ironwolf firmware is something my NAS does utilize so I'm excited that I'll be able to get more in depth health statistics and earlier warning on drive failure.Something I really liked, and maybe WD does this and I haven't seen it, the drives come with an Authetication code.Something that makes me nervous any time I purchase something like this online is if I'm getting genuine product or counterfeit. With these drives you know you are getting the real deal because you can go to Seagate and check easily an authentication number. It will use that number to verify serial number and warranty information. This might be a false sense of security if you consider you often can just verify serial numbers but it provides a warm fuzzy.Since these were recently installed I don't know yet about how long they will last. I'm hoping with Ironwolf, if they fail, they will provide enough warning to make sure I have a good backup. Ironwolf sounds almost too good to be true so I'm hoping it does exactly what it says it's supposed to.

I have been using Seagate "mechanical" disk drives for decades on my servers. If you do not subject them to a lot of on-off cycles, they last many, many years.Warning on USB use: Many adapters and some computers will shut the drive off after so many minutes idle. That Destroys drives! (Internal wear on the head latching mechanism is the prime suspect in the dozens of drives I have dismantled to insure secure destruction and to salvage the powerful magnets. NEVER discard a drive without destroying the platters first! NEVER!) Disable automatic "power saving" shut off in your BIOS settings, as it will subject your drives to many power cycles and destroy ANY spinning disk, "mechanical" type drive!

I bought a NAS. Didn't know much about how it works except I wanted network attached storage. I wanted good quality, reliable disks but also not spending a fortune. Disks seem to be a commodity item now but there are differences in performance. I wanted 2x disks so one would be copy of the other.Based on all above criteria I bought these and they work well. All I did was install them into the NAS device and they "just work". I've had no disk failures and they seem to work well. If something is "set & forget" that suits me just fine.

Ormai sto utilizzando questo IronWolf da un paio di anni e non ho avuto problemi di sorta. Niente rumore o perdite di dati ma anzi mantiene una costante velocità di trasferimento anche in situazioni complicate.In foto alcuni benchmark di questo Seagate collegato al mio pc tramite SATA 6 anche se i dati corrispondono a quanto ho visto durante i trasferimenti di varie tipologie di dati tra questo e altri HD nel mio PC

I have ordered 2 of those on 27 December 2021, for my Synology NAS DS 220+.I am writing this review on 24 December 2025 - I haven't had a slightest single issue ever since.Some people complain about the noise - I personally find these disks quite quiet, really.The performance is also top - the bottleneck is my local network speed, not the disks' speed.I would definitely by these again; now I am thinking of doubling the capacity, and I definitely won't go for any other models except Seagate IronWolfs.
