Baritone Ukulele Scales
L**S
A concise reference for someone who knows musical and stringed instrument basics
This book is a quick reference of scale and mode patterns for the baritone ukulele. It's NOT an introductory instructional book on the basic language of music and how to play a stringed instrument. It would have been helpful for the author to preface this book by stating the necessary background for a reader to benefit from its use.The book assumes that its reader(1) Knows the basic language of music, e.g., what scales and modes are, and what a root note is--and that it can be assigned to any note playable on the instrument.(2) Has a basic understanding of the purpose of choosing alternative fingerings when paying a stringed instrument. The fingerboard note patterns in this book, for example, focus on minimizing shifting your hand position on the neck--for a given root note.(3) Understands that these note patterns can be (a) assigned any root note by moving them up or down the fingerboard and (b) assigned whatever fingerings the player judges are most comfortable and efficient. In summary, this book provides a concise reference of scale and modal patterns to someone who knows musical and stringed instrument basics. For a beginner, without a teacher, this book could be confusing. With a teacher, it could be a great reference for study. If you'd like more guidance, have a look at "Baritone Ukulele Fretboard Roadmaps".

however the content and illustrations are quite good.
Could have had some written explanation of the uses of particular scales, however the content and illustrations are quite good.

Great resource but not clearly described
This book was very hard to review. On the one hand I like having the scale diagrams for all of the obscure scales that are hard to find elsewhere. On the other hand there is almost no instruction as to how to use it. If I hadn’t already been researching scale diagrams for a while I would not have been able to use it. Fortunately in my case I have been watching lots of YouTube videos on scales already so for me it was good but I had to take off a star for the serious lack of explanation as to how to use it.I suspect that most of the bad reviews are from beginners who don’t understand that the scale diagrams are moveable and so cover every key by their nature or by classical guitar players who are used to written music with intended fingerings noted.I believe making a better description for the book might resolve the confusion. I would hate to see such a great resource go out of print because if it.

Not worth the Kindle price
All the scales are in the key of C, but the scales/modes are not all related to the key of C. For instance C Dorian is not related to C Ionian, the C Mixolydian is not related to the C Major/Ionian. Book has no theory, no exercises. Well, it is a Mel Bay book.
