The white light is bright! (I usually use it on the lowest setting.) The red light is - intentionally - not bright. When you are in the real dark then it is bright enough. The red light is not very even; so, don't plan to read using it. On a dark, moonless beach in Mexico we use the red light to walk our dog. Doesn't blind our dog when it turns to look at us and is enough light to see what we are doing. Also, the blinking function for the red light can be used as a safety light. So, for our uses this is a very good value. I'd buy it again.
