The last episode, Elise, is the best of the lot (it is also the playwright's favourite - and Mr Horowitz himself makes a Hitchcockian cameo appearance in the episode). Elise deals with the mistakes made at a high level in the S.O.E. which resulted in a number of operatives' being deliberately sent to certain capture, torture and death in occupied Europe. This episode (inter alia) is about one of those operatives, a beautiful, intelligent young woman. The other main string in this episode is about the organised crime which existed in the post-war period.Overall this last series is not marred by small slips to the same extent as are the previous series, although in Elise we see a letter addressed to "Ms Pierce" (in those years only the titles Miss or Mrs existed for ladies). But leaving such trivia aside, this DVD is well worth the money. The acting is top-class; and Ellie Haddington is outstanding in her characterization of Hilda Pierce, who was based on a real individual, Vera Atkins (1908-2000), who always regarded her female SOE operatives as "her girls" and saw them off personally on their missions.In summary, this DVD is riveting entertainment, historically accurate, enlightening, and value for money. The documentary extra features on the disc alone would have been worth the money paid, even without the episodes themselves. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 5.0 out of 5 stars The Final Series - sadly *by A***N on Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 17 August 2021* Must have watched Foyles War many times now, but only just recently seen this final series of three episodes.The latter series, after the war has ended, sees Foyle in London, working for the security service. His natural abilities come into their own as he deal with, not only the spies and such, but also the bosses in the government who tend to treat him with total disrespect, until that is, he proves himself over and over.This final series is rather more complex and covers several different areas, including the huge changes that occurred in the few years just after the war. These three episodes do (just about) bring to an end this most wonderful series - it will be sorely missed by many. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 5.0 out of 5 stars Hats off to a terrific drama series, and also to Amazon for good service *by L***Y on Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 11 February 2015* Foyle's War is perfection from start to finish. The vast majority of reviews are filled with nothing but praise. The plots and general atmosphere of the final episodes are darker than the previous ones, but are so because they reflect the times. Writer Anthony Horowitz has been remarkably thorough in his research for material for the series, and the stories he tells are all based on actual events. Sometimes, and especially in the final two series, those stories are eye-opening and quite disturbing. The DVDs are worth every penny, and are a must buy, as, when repeated on television, the older episodes are cut down to accomodate more advertising time.One reviewer here gave the DVD set 1 star, claiming that the episodes in Series 8 are the same as those in Series 7, which is a really odd, as it is simply not correct. DVD sets 7 and 8 are comprised of six different episodes.PS: I actually had a little bother with one of the discs in the set I purchased. Amazon dealt with the problem immediately and with no fuss at all.
