Easy to use. Cleans up easily.
Review for:The Original Hotpop Microwave Popcorn Popper, Silicone Popcorn Maker, Collapsible Bowl BPA-Free and Dishwasher Safe- 20 Colors Available (Red) ASIN# B01M1CJNXH For the record. Popcorn has been my go to snack for the last 50 years, I’ve made it every way possible including over a campfire. I’ve used everything from the foil Jiffy Pop tins, air poppers, microwave popcorn bags, a good old fashion pot and oil, electric poppers with the rotating arm, a paper bag in a microwave NO oil…you name it. I’ve had this for about 3 months now, I was using it on a small cheap Magic Chef microwave in the garage because the main one in the kitchen was on the fritz. The smaller one in the garage was on its way out as well. First thing I discovered is that this popper gets very hot, and because of its soft silicone material, it is kind of difficult to handle, so I either use a dish towel or oven gloves to dump this slowly into a bowl to allow for the unpopped kernels to stay behind have a second try. I'm comparing this to several Presto Popcorn Poppers I’ve had since the 90’s that must use a heat reflective paper tray to make the popcorn, I hardly ever had any unpopped kernels from 3 ounces (2 batches) of fresh kernels with those poppers. But the paper trays don’t last long, and when used with oil start to break down after 4 batches or so, and I discovered that they probably use POFA’ ’s to coat them for oil resistance, I can't get a straight answer from them but I was emailed that they are made of 'oil resistant' paper, and upon further online research I discovered that the are more than likely coated with POFA's/PTFE's, the same as microwavable popcorn bags, which defeats the purpose of reusable popcorn poppers. The following is from my experience, I’ve read many comments about popcorn burning and I hope this will help. I’ve found with this Hotpop popper, that I should ONLY use about 32 grams of popcorn, or thereabouts, at a time, (about 3 slightly rounded tbsp max.) if I use much more than that and the popcorn tends to burn. The popcorn needs to keep moving, and if the density of the popped kernels is too much, the ones underneath will not move around and they will burn. I make 3 batches to fill up one bowl, which yields about 10 -12 cups depending on the brand of popcorn and the oil type I use. Oil is NOT necessary to use with this popper, and many commenters buy it for that very reason, but without oil the popcorn seems to me to be TOO dry and has the texture of styrofoam. I also never use more than 4 grams of oil per batch, about 1 level utensil tsp. The popcorn I use is usually Whole Foods organic, Trader Joe’s Organic, or Jolly Time Organic. I only use organic popcorn, because regular corn of any kind eaten regularly (over a few days to a week) aggravates my inflammatory arthritis. It's not the corn but more likely the pesticides, herbicides, & fungicides that are used on it. I know this because when the arthritic pain started about 10 years ago, I began writing down EVERYTHING I ate, and there was a direct correlation between pain, inflammation & stiffness, and the location of that pain, from certain foods and food types that I consumed. And popcorn is considered a ‘dirty crop’ in that respect. (it’s the same with corn chips for me as well) And btw, all popcorn is non-gmo, not a valid selling point and is not necessary to list on the container by the very food manufacturers that complained putting that on their food packages would cost too much money??? Anyway, back to the review. This popper works OK, I have a new about $500 (+ -) GE microwave and the popcorn pops much better now. To get a good pop the kernels need to be at about 400 - 460 degrees, the weaker, cheaper microwave’s can’t get there and more powerful microwaves usually need the power to be reduced to about 80% or 70% to keep the popcorn from burning. (most microwaves simply cook at 100% power, will reduce that time to whatever %%% you set it at unless you get an inversion microwave which reduces the actual power) I am currently using a 2.2 cu.ft. GE that is about 1200 watts? SO in order to keep the popcorn from burning I set it to 70% power at 3 minutes 30 seconds, or 80% for 3 minutes with the popper on the outer edge of the turntable, and keep my eye on it. I will get the most popped yield from the 70% setting. On this particular microwave if I put the popper in the middle of the turntable the popcorn will burn no matter what I do. I prefer avocado oil, it gives the popcorn a nice fluffy but crisp texture and the kernels pop up very large. I also use olive oil from time to time, but the kernels tend to pop a bit smaller and are a little softer in texture and it takes a bit longer to pop. All a matter of preference. And you have to experiment a bit to find out what works best for you and your microwave. This Hotpop cleans up SO easily. Even with a little bit of oil, all I need to do is to wipe it and the lid down with a sheet of paper towel, then compress and store it, and it takes up hardly any space. And after every few uses I will toss a couple of drops of dish soap with water in it and it cleans right up. NOW THAT I LIKE! I also like that I can drop it without the worry of breakage, no brittle plastic. I've dropped and cracked a few of the hard plastic ones over the years. And you should give your microwave a rest between batches if making more than 2 or three at a time. Popcorn popping is rough on microwaves and can tend to overheat them. Just put your hand on the inside of your microwave or on the turntable and feel the heat when you’re done popping, and compare that to heating up a cup of soup or something, and you will see what I mean. Overall on its own merit, I give this 5 Stars, I’d buy another one of this type, and I highly recommend it for popcorn aficionados or for those who just want a quick snack.

IT WORKS! … Like really well!
Several months ago something possessed me to purchase a Costco-sized container of Orville Redenbacher popcorn. While I do love popcorn I’m honestly not a fan of the excess oils and mess with the typical microwave popcorn pouches. So, nostalgically thinking I would just pop corn like old days, I instead ended up ruining a pot that’s never recovered. ☹️ Fast forward to this past week while considering popcorn poppers on Amazon (I really wasn’t keen on getting yet another appliance), I found this gem. I admit I was a bit skeptical… it’s not too often that you see over 35,000+ 4.6-level reviews for a product. But, thanks to all of the reviewers, and the comparatively low Prime Days pricing, I figured it was worth the experiment. Needless to say, I was very pleasantly surprised and so glad I got it. I followed the instructions exactly, noting to use only 2 TEASPOONS of oil, and ended with very few un-popped kernels (which, according to the instructions, I could reheat again until popped! Who knew??? It worked!). I’ve since tried using both the smaller and larger batch fill lines (there are 2 concentric circles at the bottom of the popper indicating how much popcorn to add for the different amounts of popcorn to pop), and ended up with delicious popcorn every time. I still haven’t dialed in the exact amount of time on my microwave (1,800 watts for reference), and just go by sound until I don’t hear any more pops. I haven’t gotten any burnt popcorn, not like the typical microwave popcorn pouches. NOTE: if you’re getting too many un-popped kernels, you might be using too much oil … you only need TEAspoons instead of tablespoons … an easy and common mistake I always make. Unlike stovetop poppers you really don’t need a lot of oil at all to get great results with HotPop. Also, the quality of the popcorn kernels matters, and I’ve always had great results with Orville Redenbacher, It honestly worked even better in the HotPop. Cleanup is super easy with just dish soap and water. And as many other reviewers have said, the collapsible bowl makes storage easy and convenient, too. Overall, I’m quite happy with the HotPop popcorn popper for how easy it is to use and how well it works. Don’t let the low price fool you… it’s a great buy, and one less appliance to clutter up your kitchen.

Makes great popcorn with ease!
Used this product for the first time today. Couldn’t have been easier, and the resulting popcorn was perfect! I used the famous “OR” brand popping corn kernels for popping. I filled the bottom of the unit with kernels as instructed. I added 2 tsp of olive oil and mixed it all together. Placed the top inside and about 3 1/2 minutes later the lid was floating off the top of some gorgeous popcorn. I salted and stuffed my face with the delicious result. Yes, there were unpopped kernels. But I’d rather stop short of burning the popcorn and waste some, very inexpensive, corn kernels. Very happy with this purchase! Easy cleanup. Love that it folds down for easy storage. My new healthy go to!

Quick and Easy But The Tub Handles Get Really Hot If Popping More Than One Tub In Succession
I have a Panasonic 1250 watt microwave and found that this tub works well at 2:50 on the timer, at full power. One Star deduct for the fact that, when I use 1/3 cup of Jolly Time popcorn (which takes it up to the lower line level inside the popper, that it always leaves about 2-3 tsp of unpopped kernels. After removing the popped kernels, I can put the unpopped back in for another minute or so and get most of them to pop. Well, what if I just extend the original cooking time? Although I have not tried it, I fear or suspect that it might start burning the already popped kernels. I do not use oil, since that would be counterproductive to why I bought this to begin with. I don't understand why the rest of the kernels don't pop in the original time frame, but am willing to live with the wasted kernels, since using this is so easy, hassle free, and needing no cleanup afterwards, beyond wiping the insides with a paper towel. 1/3 cup of kernels is just right to completely fill this tub, but to make larger batches for movie night for several viewers, I have to resort to my Stir Crazy, which uses 1 cup of kernels to produce two large movie theater style popcorn tubs. I would have to do 3 batches in the HOTPOP to equal that, which becomes less convenient than the Stir Crazy (which requires 2-3 Tbsp of oil to pop 99% of the Jolly Time kernels. After seeing a lot of 1 Star reviews, I do not trust them at all and think some reviewers purposely fabricate sabotage reviews or false reviews for reasons that I can't fathom. When used as directed and following advice to do test runs on length of time to microwave successfully in whatever microwave one owns, this tub performs pretty efficiently and does not burn the popcorn. I think most people can set their timer for 3 minutes or 3 plus 15 seconds and then standby to listen for the signs that kernels have pretty much stopped popping and noting the time left, to be subtracted from their starting time, to establish the optimum time to set the timer in the future. Generally when popping lapses reach 3-5 seconds of silence, its time to open the door and remove the tub. At that point, all but 1-2 tsp will be left unpopped. One thing I noticed which surprised me was how hot the HOTPOP tub gets (on the handles as well as the body of the tub). It is manageable after one tub is popped, but if you do tubs in succession for more than one tub, the handles get too hot to handle without using pot holders. So something in the chemical composition of the silicone is causing the tub to react to the microwaves and heat in response. This can sometimes also be noticed when microwaving things in glass cookware, such as Corningware bowls. I don't know whether that is a negative thing with the HOTPOP, as regards to health, but I suspect that it is harmless since I don't think that there can be any transfer of the tubs substance to things that are heated in the dry environment of no oils to leach from the tub to the popcorn. As a former restaurant owner I was, and am keenly focused on food safety (not using any aluminum cookware especially, since the jury is out on whether aluminum can leach into liquids cooked with acidic ingredients such as tomatoes etc). So for me, if it isn't stainless steel, I am not cooking in it. But when it comes to a product like this, I think it is most likely a safe situation. Other reviewers keep mentioning the failure of the pinch test to determine if something is 100% silicone. I am not convinced that is the absolute barometer one should use in judging all of the various brands of competing microwave popping tubs. So many of the brands pledge on a stack of bibles that they are 100% pure silicone, but when you read reviews on every one of them, there are plenty of naysayers out there in the 1 and 2 Star review categories that claim and show through pictures that the pinch test revealed the inclusion of non-silicone ingredients. Something is not right on this point. Is the pinch test really relevant at all or are the manufacturers flat out lying, or are the reviewers not being entirely honest. For me, in the big picture of all this, I think it is a worthless attribute to focus on, without empirical evidence through destruction testing to define what exactly is in a specific product, if it is not pure 100% silicone. And lastly, as regards to the safety of silicone, we should be mindful of the fact that silicone breast implants have been proven to be extremely injurious to the health of women who have had silicone leaking into the system from failed implants. So who is to say that it is save in a situation like a microwave popper. I thing it is all a bunch of false noise and will feel entirely comfortable using this popper or other brands that are the most popular on the market. Sorry for all of the detours in this review, but these are thoughts that come to mind when deciding what to share, that might be helpful or of value to consider. I also have a stir

Excellent way to make healthy popcorn
I just go it today and used tonight. Wow it worked great and popped all the kernels. No oil, just put the kernels in and for me 2 minutes and 30 seconds and perfect popcorn. The only reason I moved it to another bowl is cuz the silicone was a little hot and I was impatient but you can eat right from the bowl. First time but highly recommend.

Full Bowl of Popcorn in 3 mins!
This girl is no longer going to lug out the Dutch oven to make popcorn! The HOTPOP Silicone popcorn maker exceeded all of my expectations. In about 3 mins I had an entire bowl of fresh popped corn with almost no unpopped kernels. The instructions recommended 1-2 teaspoons of oil as an option- I skipped it and had amazing results. Sooo much easier than popping in the heavy Dutch oven in the stove, shaking that beast over the hot stove and no oil needed! This may be this years Christmas gift for many family and friends!

Makes Healthier Popcorn
Works exactly as advertised. The silicone does get hot so be sure to grab it by the handles when removing from the microwave. DO NOT USE OIL. It can make a nice batch at a time. Well worth the money and better for you since it doesn’t have all those extra ingredients regular microwave packets have.

Klasse Ware :-)
