Olde Thompson 6 Caffe Wood Pepper Mill and Salt Shaker Set

These are elegant and stylish shakers. They are functional and well made. Both shakers were easy to fill and the pepper grinds without jamming. They make a great addition to the table.

This is a very attractive set of a peppermill and salt shaker. Aesthetically they are very pleasing and when you hold them they have a very high quality feel to them. Peppermill: Most, if not all, of the pepper grinders that I have used in the past always seemed like they struggled to actually grind pepper. Regardless of how I tightened or loosened the grinding mechanism, I would always put a lot of effort into grinding for a seemingly small result of ground pepper. Until I purchased this salt and pepper grinder set I had thought that this is just the way that all pepper grinders worked. This pepper grinder is a joy to use, it grinds pepper quickly and well, with minimal effort. Usually only a couple turns of the grinder and I have all the pepper I could desire, and I usually use a good amount of pepper. Salt Shaker: There really isn't much to be said about the salt shaker, and that is not a bad thing. It is a very nice, elegant, simple salt shaker. They only thing to keep in mind about this salt shaker is that the holes in the top aren't really well suited for sea salt or kosher salt, however if the holes were larger to accommodate coarser grained salts, then they would be too big for standard table salt. With that in mind it isn't really a problem, just a design choice.

And our dinner conversation went like this..... Son: I hate our salt and pepper shakers. Mom: Excuse me? Son: I hate our salt and pepper shakers. Mom: All of them? Son: All of them. Mom: You hate all our festive, seasonal salt and pepper shakers? That is pretty harsh. Even the flamingos? Son: Mom, I feel like I'm going to flatten them every time I pick them up. How do you expect me to shake this? Mom: They are a little delicate. You have to be gentle. Son: Mom, salt and pepper shakers are meant to be turned upside and shaken. Mom Gently. What about the peacocks? Those are sturdier. Son I broke the plume on one. Mom: You did? That's awful. How did that happen? Son: I used it. Mom: You are too rough with things. Can it be glued? Son: Mom, we need useful salt and pepper shakers. Mom: I love our salt and pepper shakers. What about the seahorses? Son: (cue: rolling eyes): The salt has one hole. One hole. Why can't we just have regular salt and pepper shakers like a normal family? Mom: So ordinary. You always loved Mr.and Mrs. Leprechaun. Son: They don't work. The stoppers fall out when you shake them. Mom: They are so cute. Son: Mom, they are just supposed to dispense salt and pepper. They aren't cute when they swamp your food with salt or pepper. Mom: (sigh) What do you suggest? Son: I could order some beautiful, earthy, wooden salt and pepper shakers from Amazon. Look at these (shows me picture) they would go nicely with your pottery and be a real asset to any meal you fix. Me: They aren't cute Son: I will be able to pick them up without worrying about a wing or a foot breaking off. They will work. Mom: Fine. But the new shakers are an early Christmas present. Son: I can order them? Me: Go ahead. When the package arrived from Amazon, my son was as excited as the day I finally admitted the toothpaste tube was empty and agreed to a new tube. My son smiles every time he picks the shakers. They work, they are durable, and they're attractive. Not cute, but attractive.

I have been using this set long enough to say that the pepper mill does hold up well to daily use and produces a fine to coarse grind. A pepper mill is an essential for me in the kitchen, though I rarely use the salt shaker when cooking. The pepper mill loads from the top, but the salt shaker is filled from the bottom and sealed with a rubber flange. This is not an ideal design, and you have to be sure you have that flange tucked in securely or.....else. I don't like this feature. The simple design in dark wood is very pleasing, and the matched set looks nice on the table. Since my goal was to replace a pepper mill for cooking and also have a salt shaker for table use, this worked out well. Olde Thompson makes reliable and reasonably priced products.

Wonderful product, made by the undisputed leader in grinders/shakers in the US. A domestic product! The cool thing is that you get their superior grinder technology in a very reasonably priced version of their more expensive models ($70+ for a pepper grinder? No thanks). What I really like: so far, it has not shown any wear or smears, or other signs of discoloration/contamination of the outside surface, which was a problem for our old grinder. Kudos to the manufacturer for price, quality and performance. Highly recommended.

These are high-quality and easy to refill. They grind pepper to a fine consistency, and the design is absolutely beautiful. I’m planning to purchase another set—to keep near the stove. They’d make a lovely housewarming gift. I highly recommend them!

I bought this set in the black color for my farmhouse kitchen, and I couldn’t be happier with them. The quality is exceptional, and they produce a beautifully consistent grind. The look is so versatile and timeless that they would work equally well in my oldest daughter’s traditional kitchen, or in my younger daughter’s modern kitchen. I guess a true classic look is always in style!

This replaced a wooden salt shaker/pepper grinder set I had owned and used for over 20 years. Unfortunately, the salt shaker finally gave out and the lid wouldn't tighten. Sounds funny, but I was sort of attached to those and was convinced that they just wouldn't make them like that any more. I was wrong. This is a very nice, solid-feeling set. The grinder is effective and smooth and the shaker shakes well ;-) These color of these is very, very dark to the point you could almost call them black, but there is still just a hint of wood grain. I think they're very attractive. I highly recommend as a very affordable, qreat-quality set.

These are so well made ...out of wood. They work beautifully. Adjustable grind. Look great on the table. I highly recommend.
