Janet is my trusted source for chicken care information!
I enjoy following Janet's blog b/c she is so knowledgeable and generous with the information she shares. She deeply cares for the wellbeing of the animals, and it shows in this book. As Joel Salatin says in the foreword, "you get the feeling that these chickens are part of the family."Since I don't have chickens yet, I loved her in-depth ideas for building coops and runs, but I was also drawn to the chapters about feeding, supplements, treats, and forage gardens. I feel like I have all the information I need to get started and maintain a healthy backyard flock. Janet is so encouraging that I feel confident that I could do it.Disclosure: The publisher sent me a copy to review, however, the opinions expressed are my own.

I’ve learned more about chickens from this book then any other to be honest. Definitely good for someone just getting started as well as a good reference to keep in your library.

Nothing Unusual, but a nice book
I was hoping to see some exciting, out-of-the-ordinary projects to add some innovative fun to the chicken coop. There’s nothing wrong with this book except that I didn’t see anything new. If I’d read it even six months ago I’d probably be charmed, but at this point I’ve read about all these projects in several places. If you’re still in the beginning phases of exploring what’s wanted to keep chickens, you’ll most likely enjoy and benefit from this well-written book.I’d have liked to see a diagram for the mobile chicken coop—even just a hand-drawn, not-to-scale one. Yes I can figure it out for myself, but a diagram saves so much time and hassle. I’m not going to build it—I have other plans using stuff I happen to have lying about—but if I did build it, I’d be grateful for a bit of a schematic.I loved the idea of a chicken jungle gym, however I think my chickens would constantly be knocking down the one in the photographs. I’ll most likely make one in the springtime—but it will involve log uprights, Forster bits, closet rods and pegged joints, not bits of small milled lumber laid across cinder blocks. It’s not much more work next to the repeated reassembly that’s going to be needed for the quick and easy one.If you’re reading up on chickens and haven’t gotten far, you’ll most likely love and benefit from this book. If you’re looking for innovative, ingenious new ideas that make you say, COOL! I’VE GOTTA DO THAT!!, then maybe keep looking.

Must Buy for the Chicken Keeper!
SUCH A GORGEOUS BOOK!Packed with information and beautiful photographs and artwork....Janet truly has hit the big time! All her hard work and efforts along with her husband’s has been noticed by one of my favorite authors, world wide speaker, Joel Salatin! He graciously wrote the intro!! That speaks volumes of Janet’s hard work and contribution to the homesteading world!
