2806 Swann Morton Retract away Handle - Sleeved , Blue

Have used these for many years. They are excellent for safely using scalpel blades for general projects as the blades fit inside the handle avoiding the risk of cutting yourself when grabbing hold of the handle, or if the thing falls to the floor - no risk of spearing your foot!!! Sadly Swann Morton seem to have discontinued these handles in favour of an inferior plastic thing - I was really pleased to find the metal version still for sale on Amazon. They are built really well and stand up to use - mine are well over 10 years old. I needed a couple of replacements as I have lost a couple of mine - doubtless they will now reappear after buying replacements!!!

Well made, solid handle. I'm not quite sure what to make of it, though. It's quite a heavy handle and the blade slide offers quite a bit of resistance. I dobbed in a little silicon grease to help. As some people have noted, there is some blade wobble compared to a fixed handle. I didn't really notice any movement in use, though. I think the reason for the wobble is that the blade is a little more difficult to access when removing, compared to a fixed handle, so they compensated by loosening it a little. Anyway, cons there are, but the huge pro is safety. Recommended.

Scalpels are nice tools, but an exposed blade is not so nice. A retractable scalpel is obviously a good idea and desirable. This one has a nice heft, at exactly 50g with a Swann-Morton 10A blade fitted. The blade locks in three positions: fully retracted, halfway out (working position) and fully out (can install or remove blade, or use it this way.) It is secure - you must push down on the white button to make it slide. It is mostly metal. Another reviewer has suggested they may have stopped making these from metal and Amazon is one of few sources selling them still. I don't know. But I'm glad I've bought one. The price is a little steep and I dithered over buying one for ages. It's not special enough that I feel a need to buy a spare while they're available, but I'm glad to have one. I've dropped one star because there is a tiny amount of movement of the blade. That's harsh because I think it's inevitable given the design. I don't think it will affect most uses, if any, but some people will disagree so it's worth mentioning.

It is a very helpful handle to use and quite safe since the blade can be retracted. I am very satisfied with this product. I believe it is unique in the market due to its retractable blade design. I would appreciate if the blade movement would lock in a couple of intermittent places.

Great! Safe to store but only genuine SM blades fit. Bought another for my son. Pluse large pack of genuine SM No10 blades for us to share.

First class product, I use this handle for light use due to the nature of the scalpel blades, will use number 10, 10a, 11, 15, and number 6. Lock is positive both for changing the blade, fully extended or halfway for cutting, when closed blades are safely enclosed in the handle. I personally only use swann morton blades as I find other makes are made to different tolerances and don't always close when installed,

Wish I’d had one of these, so much easier to store and transport than the normal handle, robust and super comfortable. I use it all the time, a staple tool for me.

1This is a sturdy handle but no 12 blades do not fit as they will not retract fully otherwise an excellent product.

E' il secondo che compro uguale, perchè il primo l'ho perso. Il fatto di essere retratttile è il suo punto forte. Una volta inserita la lama, si tira fuori quando serve, e al momento del cambio, fino ad allora resta custodita e protetta da ogni eventuale problema.

Das Messer hatte den Anschein, dass es mit einer Klinge geliefert werden soll. Nach dem Auspacken musste ich feststellen, dass dem nicht so ist und die Klinge fehlte. Nicht zu empfehlen!
