Caché ObjectScript and MUMPS: Technical Learning Manual

A Reference to take you from Beginner to Advanced
(Disclaimer: Mike asked me to pre-review the book and send him comments, which he included in the book...second disclaimer: I received no money for that and will receive no money from the sale of this book...third disclaimer: I bought the book (the author did not provide me a free copy), I liked it that much!) I have been looking for a printed book to use for those time when I just need to be reminded of the syntax of a command I don't use often and one where I can learn the parts of the language that I forgot or have ignored in my job (Senior Programmer for a University Hospital in Massachusetts). This book has satisfied both needs and I will be recommending it to people who I know use Cache Object Script (MUMPS) and those who want to learn it. This book steps you through the language and is loaded with multiple code examples. Cache ObjectScript is a simple language that can be used in complicated ways. It is very powerful, and is being used in the healthcare and finance sectors. If you buy this book and follow along, you should get the feel for the language, and you should be able to write effective and efficient routines.

It takes all kinds
I got this for my nerdy boyfriend who wanted to know the underpinnings of the stupid computer programs that are devastating healthcare (where we both work) at the cost of billions of federal dollars (i.e. our money). Electronic medical health systems are a boondoggle being sold to us as a way to modernize and improve care. The money would better be spent on establishing a Medicare for all, single payer national health insurance plan but that's another story. Meanwhile, EPIC, which is the program that my hospital bought, is based on MUMPS, an old program created in the '70's, which shows how innovative the "new" expensive EMH records really are. P.S. I don't think he actually read it this book, but it made him feel better to know he could at some time, and could sneer at EPIC more convincingly.

Clear, helpful, and great for the Objectscript/MUMPS Novice
This author is the only one I know who has written on Objectscript and MUMPS as it applies to the Intersystems products in a way that helps the reader from the ground up. His book far excels that of Intersystems's attempts at tutorials online, and has been incredibly helpful, so much so that I've ordered his second book. His exercises and explanations are clear and concise, but not so much so that you miss anything, and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this to anyone learning the language.

Covers the material well, presentation is so-so
The book showed me plenty of things that I didn't know, but I found it kind of hard to read. Although I program in Cache for a living, and really wanted to read the book, it took me a couple of months to get through it. I'm glad I did though and there really aren't many choices available to learn Mumps and Cache. I have a couple of old Mumps books but they don't talk about any of the object or SQL features that this book covers. So to summarize, it's the best book available on the subject. Nuts. I wish someone at Intersystems would write a better one.PS: I bought two more copies for my staff because in spite of its flaws its still the best book on the subject. :-)

Good intro book.
There aren't very many books out there that covers MUMPS. I think I have seen all of the most recent ones and I think this is the best. It is well written and provides a good basic understanding of the language. Some of the other reviewers stated that it was too basic. Although it is rather basic it is a good introduction book for those that are unfamiliar with MUMPS. After you make it through this book you should be using the documentation more than a book anyway. I keep this book on my shelf at work for a quick reference if needed.

Already has been useful!
I am new to Caché so I wanted a reference guide and something to teach me how to understand scripts written in Caché versus just typing in commands. So far so good! Format is a little kludgy but other than that an excellent book.

Great reference
A must have for the beginner as well as experienced Mumps/Cache programmer. Laid out well and should be easily understood by anyone. Picked up a few tips at first glance.
