Can this be removed or does it leave residue?

It really depends, but the adhesive has a polyester carrier, so in most cases, it should be removable without leaving residue. XCEL

Any thoughts on how it would work as tent padding? Was thinking put sticky side down onto the tent tarp. Thoughts?

I actually thought about this when I saw the material the first time. The material is thick dense lightweight foam and would be great for tent padding.
