Excellent Online Teaching: Effective Strategies For A Successful Semester Online Paperback – May 14, 2013

Easy to read. Kept me engaged. Great advice without going too deep or using too many words. Plays well in a business course environment (my arena) as well with some simple adjustments. I highly recommend this book.

This summer I had a chance to read Excellent Online Teaching! by Aaron Johnson. This book gives you some simple and easy ways to be an effective online teacher and I recommend it! But what if you are not an online teacher? Is this book for you? I can answer those questions for you since I teach in both of those learning environments. I am both a face to face classroom teacher as well as an online teacher and I see the gap is closing! Many of the strategies suggested in this book can be used in a face to face school with teachers who infuse lots of technology into their curriculum.

I originally read this book while I was teaching online during Covid. It gave so many practical tips on how to reach my students After a few years off, I am again teaching online. I was able to scan through this information quickly and remember the techniques that helped me to be a more successful and positive online teacher. I highly recommend!

First, I was moved by the intellectual and emotional intelligence of this text. What a gem of a resource! I am now smitten with Aaron as an author. I am an old dog trying desperately to learn new tricks to meet the needs of an incoming college freshman class without knowing what iteration of classroom configuration I am facing in six short weeks. I have been in a flat out panic and contemplating retirement because I was afraid I wouldn't be able to deliver. Aaron has reminded me I do know how to teach, I can learn, and I am still valuable. Aaron's soulful, sensible, professional approach to online learning is engaging, reassuring, and calming. I ordered the physical text and plan on rereading it daily. The resources are wonderful and invaluable. I have always told my students they are never alone. Now I know neither am I.

Useful but I teach in a corporate environment so while many things apply, most are geared towards semester long courses. I still took copious notes in the first few chapters because those apply to all types of online teaching. The book was definitely with the read, it only took a day (in spurts).

You won't find a ton of depth in this book but many good reminders and pointers. Easy reference for keeping an instructor focused. Look elsewhere for information on designing a online course, however.

This book offers some direct and straightforward tips that will help you to become a better online educator. Johnson is brief in his tips but they are very powerful and will offer even experienced online educators new ways to grow and transform. I read this book as part of a virtual book study with virtual schools across the nation. While most of the participants were seasoned online instructors, almost everyone found a new way to grow and tips to use to enhance the learning experience of their students. I highly recommend this book if you have hit a plateau in your online teaching. Johnson even joined up in our book study and offered feedback. If you purchase the book, he also has an online site to help offer more tips. I would highly recommend this book to help you create a more powerful learning experience with your students. It is a quick read and contains tips that you could implement immediately to improve your online teaching.

I'm an online educator and our PLC picked this book as part of our professional development. We have found this book to be very useful. It suggests practical and concrete actions you can take. For example, we've already revised our welcome letters based on the advice given in the book to make them more concise and congenial. Every program is different so of course not everything is applicable, but much of it is. Some of the non-applicable stuff is because we have rolling enrollments all semester and this book assumes set start and due dates that are the same for all the students in your program. That is a small part of it though and the vast majority of what is discussed is applicable to everyone. This book definitely packs a big punch for its small size.

A must read for those teaching on line. Clear directions in 50 pages. Really excellent book.
