Great book for people getting into mandolin playing -- but not for complete beginners
This is a very good book for people who have advanced beyond the level of beginning mandolin playing. Having a great foundation in the basics of mandolin playing is necessary to get the most out of this book, but for intermediate mandolin players it's a great addition to your library and gives us a chance to analyze what makes good mandolin solos. My only regret about the book (and why it's only 4 stars instead of 5 stars) is that the music is printed so large that it takes a lot of pages for one single solo. And since mandolin is an instrument that requires 2 hands all the time, that makes it difficult to read and play the music. But all music-reading musicians learn how to get around those problems and the music is very good so don't let that stop you from buying this book.

Great picking songs with tabs
This book is great and contains both notes and tabs so you can play with whatever method you are comfortable with. If you can't read notes, the tabs are easy for beginners and experienced Pickers. Also has audio CDs so you can hear the songs and pick along.

Best proficiency test for the uninitiated
In my opinion these lessons accomplish their goal awesomely. You are given very clear guide lines on how to get up to a level of proficiency required for jamming; and not looking like a total green horn newbie. You are given a set list, concrete examples, and potential problem areas are highlighted. I really appreciate Steve's straightforward, no nonsense, clear approach to pickin'. The arrangements are excellent. As someone who has been in a persistently-low-intermediate-state for the last few years of mando pickin' I am hoping that the good advice given in these CDs will get me to the next level. They seem to be working!!!! With luck and perseverance I should soon feel uninhibited enough to get initiated in a parking lot somewhere. Ahem.

Not much instruction, OK play along tracks
Some OK arrangements to work with and play along tracks, but if you expecting something really instructional, forget it. Go to YouTube instead.
