The Music of the Lord of the Rings Films: A Comprehensive Account of Howard Shore's Scores (Book & Rarities CD): 1

This book gives great insight on the ideas on which Howard Shore's soundtrack to The Lord of the Rings movie trilogy is based. It brings out details and connections that I, as a listener never found out on my own, and which now make listening even more enjoyable. The accompanying CD is a great addition.

For anyone studying the music of Lord of the Rings, Film Music/Composition, Music for musicals and operas including its composition, Western Mainstream Orchestral composition in general, this is a very good book to read.It is full of compositional techniques used by Howard Shore in the Lord of the Rings film. What you get sense of; is the strong use of leitmotif and how it has been used so successfully within the films.When you watch the films after reading the book, you discern sections of the music that you have read about and only then do you ascertain how vital a role music has within the film.Though it is a specialist book written by American musicologist; Doug Adams. Like books of this type, I think it is only truly understandable by those who have good knowledge of western classical music theory.For me as a music student it is fantastic and at £31 definitely a good buy!

A great book, a must for music lovers and especially those who love the music of Lord of the Rings

Having written my undergraduate dissertation on Howard Shore's for the Lord of the Rings back in 2009, I continue to have a significant interest in his work. If only this book had been available back then, it woudl have been an absolute Godsend! It is an absolute treasure! Every leitmotif is displayed and explored in detail. Motivic relationships are mapped out and there are superb Alan Lee and John Howe sketches throughout. CD contains extremely rare previously unheard material well worth a listen by any Shore fan!

This is a lovely book with everything a Tolkien enthusiast who also enjoys the Peter Jackson films could want. It is beautifully presented, with satisfying illustrations and so much background to Howard Shore's composition of the musical scores to the films. And a great bonus is the CD of rarities- alternate versions of the published scores plus some additional and little heard material. An alternate "into the west" is so good, I wonder it didn't make it into the films or earlier published scores.The only drawback for me is I cannot read music and now I wish I could. I may even have to try to learn.I would strongly recommend this book and am glad to have it on my bookshelf.

Purchased this book to help student studying for OCR 'A' level Music - Film Music section.A truely superb book written by a master - if you really want to learn how to write/construct essays that appear in this section of the syllabus this is the book for you.

Currently writing my dissertation on how far leitmotifs aid the development of the narrative in The Lord of the Rings and I honestly couldn't have done it without this book. The detail of each and every leitmotif throughout the trilogy, and their numerous variations are analysed in detail. Doug Adam's explains how the musical themes are connected and when and why they appear in the film when they do. I do believe you need some understanding of the theory of music and reading music to unlock the books full potential, which I do not have as a film student nevertheless, it's a great book!

Même si vous ne connaissez rien à la musique (come moi même), vous verrez les films (surtout les versions étendues) d'un autre point de vue. Un must pour les fans de la bande sonore et des films de Peter Jackson.

El mejor libro para los aficionados y compositores del Film Scoring, en especial si eres fan del Señor de los Anillos

Il libro è veramente ben fatto. L'analisi dei temi musicali è esaustiva e accompagnata da spiegazioni su parti dello spartito originale. Davvero utile per chi vuole approfondire/ricercare/conoscere come è stata realizzata la colonna sonora del film.Oltre a questo, il libro è esteticamente molto curato. Pagine patinate, arricchite con foto e disegni della produzione del film; copertina rigida con segnalibro in tessuto; prima copertina sembra addirittura ricoperta da tessuto.Certamente il libro è in inglese, ma anche per chi non avesse una buonissima conoscenza della lingua non credo risulterebbe complessa la comprensione del testo, infatti viene utilizzato un linguaggio comprensibile e a volte basico. Adatto veramente a tutti gli amanti del film, libro da avere sicuramente in casa!Ovviamente Amazon impeccabile nel spedizione, molto veloce!!MOLTO SODDISFATTA E CONSIGLIATISSIMO!
