As best her vet and I have figured, she was born to a female infected with Avian Borna Virus (“ABV”) – a very nasty illness for which there is no cure – just palliative treatment of symptoms. ABV causes internal organs to swell and press against the chest wall. This seems to be interpreted as itchiness. The vet prescribed a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug which worked pretty well for several years. Sadly, the medication caused an ulcer in Charly’s stomach. We switched to a more gently anti-inflamatory and added a cytoprotective agent to deal with the ulcer. These meds are working as well as can be ex-pected. Before there were any health issues, I trained Charly to take fluids from a syringe. This was done as a pre-cautionary measure in case health issues arose in the long-life span of a Cockatoo. Medicines given to companion birds at home are almost always liquids, so my training has been most useful. Charly’s not always happy to take her meds, but she’s willing to meet me halfway. The 1ml syringes are just like the ones that come with her meds. The volume scales printed on the barrel of the syringe are consistent to allow you to accurately measure the amount of medicine drawn up as a dose. Once the syringe is “load-ed” I can dispense the medicine with one hand leaving my other hand free to steady Charly’s head. The syringes are individually wrapped and are sterile during first use. I carefully wash used syringes for reuse to help save on costs. This practice is accepted by my veterinarian and consistent with what’s done in the Ornithology Department of the zoo where I volunteer. I don’t need and, therefore, don’t use the needles that come with the syringes. I bought a Sharps contain-er in which I dispose of the needles. When it’s full I bring it to the vet who accepts it for disposal. Syringes invariably cost more at shops other than desertcart.
