Review: Authentic German Pumpernickel bread! - Growing up in Frankfurt, West Germany - this was one of my favorite breads. I'm glad it's available for purchase here in the USA. Reminds me of home and my youth. The pack of 12 might be a lot, but they keep very long in the pantry if you don't open the package. You can freeze them to keep longer. This is a wheat-free bread and has pretty simple ingredients. I think it maybe an acquired taste and texture, but it tastes great as an open toast for putting things like salami and cheese, or spreading avocado on it. I also like to put a fried egg on it.

**Q: Why is this bread's expiration date a year from the day purchased? Are there any tocopherols/synthetic ingredients to preserve that are not listed?**
A: All of the ingredients are listed and I'm pretty sure that pasteurization adds to the bread's shelf life.  I keep mine stored in the freezer until I'm ready to open a package.  Then, I slide in a sheet of paper towel to help keep it dry after breaking the seal. Once opened, it's best to keep it stored in the refrigerator and consume it withn 4-5 days.

**Q: how many calories and carbs per slice?**
A: Here's the nutrition facts: serving size 1 piece (68g), servings per individual pack- 7... Calories 125, fat 1g, saturated/trans fat 0g, cholesterol 0mg, sodium 300mg, carbs 23g, fiber 6g, sugar 1g, protein 4g... VitA 6% Thiamin 8% riboflavin 6% calcium 4% niacin 4% iron 15%

**Q: Is there a trick to toasting this bread?   I have not been able to get it crispy, even with a longer time**
A: We put the slice on the rack (not a pan) in our toaster over and turn it up as high as it will go. I think it has something to do with how dark the bread is (darker type bread seems to take longer to toast) as well as how dense it is. I don't think it will ever get as "toasty"  as regular bread due to the density, but you can achieve a satisfactorily toasted piece usually. I have also put it into a non-stick fry pan - with no oil or butter- and toasted it there. That has worked for me.Good luck.

**Q: The elephant in the room -$33 ?  does that not seem excessive? when you buy thi in germany it would be no more then a couple of bucks. just wondering**

### ⭐ Poor packaging turned bread into crumbles, making most bread slices unusable

I have ordered DELBA bread many times before, and I love the flavor. Apparently the shipping method however has changed from a fixed box (in pervious years) to a loose collections in a larger box, which damages almost all the bread slices inside. As a result, the bread turned into crumbles (see image) making it unusable. I tried to return the bread but the company does not accept returns. Quite disappointing.
