S&B Golden Curry Sauce Mix, Extra Hot, 7.8 Ounce

I’ve tried a few different curry blocks over time, and this is the one I keep coming back to. The extra hot version has a really nice balance of flavor and spice. The heat level is noticeable but not overwhelming. It’s definitely spicier than “medium,” but still very manageable if you like a bit of kick. What I like most is that it’s not just heat for the sake of it. The sauce comes out rich, slightly savory-sweet, and has that classic Japanese curry flavor. Preparation is simple. Just add the cubes to water with your cooked meat and vegetables, and it thickens into a smooth sauce pretty quickly. I usually make it with chicken, potatoes, carrots, and onions, and it turns out consistently good every time. One thing to keep in mind is that the sodium is on the higher side, so I try not to overdo the portion size or add too much extra seasoning. For the price and convenience, it’s a great value and an easy way to make a comforting meal at home without much effort. If you like Japanese curry and want something with a bit more heat, this is a solid choice.

I'd never had Japanese curry, and, after several thousand anime characters going berzerk over the stuff, I figured I'd give it a shot. Then I decided I'd give it a shot WITHOUT spending $25 for a serving at a Japanese restaurant. I did some research and was led to Golden Curry. I was advised to start with medium hot, so I wouldn't hurt myself. It's surprisingly easy to make a basic curry, and the Golden Curry cubes are easy to use. It was the blandest glop I'd ever tasted, and I've eaten school lunches! Enter Extra Hot. I figured curry deserved a second chance. And the Extra Hot is actually hot. I mean, not EXTRA hot, but it's at least got some heat to it. If you really like spicy hot, I'd recommend adding more heat while you're cooking it. The flavor is good, and I enjoyed eating it. It's even better over egg noodles than rice.

Very delicious curry seasoning! In fact, it is my favorite Japanese curry, and I buy it quite regularly. I love this curry with Chicken.

This sauce is very easy to make and very tasty for such an easy meal. We generally follow the recipe on the side of the box, but usually add more vegetables. A few tips on buying and using this mix: 1. Beware of price gouging. Supermarket price is $2 for the 3 ounce box and $4 for the 7 ounce box. 2. Sodium content per serving is pretty high, so beware of using more than you need to for your meal. 2. The 7 ounce box is rated for 12 servings, but only contains 8 cubes. We use 2 cubes for 3 meals (dinner for 2 then leftover lunch for 1). That gives us much less sauce than restaurants usually serve, but it is enough for us. 3. Recipe on the box says use 5 cups of water for 12 servings. We use 1.25 cup of water for 3 servings (2 cubes). 4. Extra-hot is less spicy than medium-hot at our local Japanese restaurant. We always get extra-hot then add more Japanese pepper to taste. Note that Amazon sells several other brands of Japanese curry mixes. The Vermont curry costs less than S&B (for the 8 ounce box) and is not as popular as S&B (in terms of sales), but a lot of people like it better. The Vermont curry gives you a dark brown sauce like what you get in Japanese restaurants (S&B is a yellowish sauce). Vermont curry has a richer flavor than S&B which many people like, but it may be too much for some people. Some people like to mix the 2 brands to get a hybrid flavor, e.g. using 1 cube of S&B curry with 1 cube of Vermont curry.

For me the the extra hot just was more curry flavor which is what I was looking for

I do find the taste slightly on the mild side in terms of salt, but nothing a little seasoning can’t fix. Overall, a flavorful and convenient option for quick homemade curry.
