Pelorus is named after Pelorus Jack, a famous Risso's dolphin, who in the late 1800s was known to escort ships through French Pass, a dangerous stretch of water on the route between Wellington and Nelson. The freshness of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir in Marlborough's cool-climate quickly raised the notion of the creation of a Cloudy Bay sparkling wine within the first two vintages of the Estate. The first vintage of Pelorus was created in 1987, with the objective of expressing the uniqueness of the Marlborough terroir with a sparkling wine using the time honoured methode traditionnelle of Champagne. "Pelorus is the sparkling quintessence of Marlborough." - Harold Osbourne, guiding hand in the creation of Pelorus.I n Pelorus, the elegance of Chardonnay meets the complexity of Pinot Noir. "We are not after big, bright, loud flavours; what we are looking for are pastel coloured flavours such as citrus, apple and flowers with a savoury balance.
