Didn't notice the expanded volume, but there's no weird smell, just reminiscent of coconut. I've been making my own potting mix from coir for a couple of years, just wet, mix with some perlite and add plant food. These coco coir bricks are amazing for repotting and seed starting. They expand so much once you add water, and the texture is perfect — light, fluffy, and holds moisture really well without getting soggy. I used them as part of my soil mix with perlite and bark, and my plants are loving it. It’s also great that it’s organic and free from chemicals.
