A common 5-Spice blend includes these spices: star anise, cloves, cinnamon, Sichuan peppercorns and fennel seeds. It gives a combination of sweet, salty, sour, bitter, and umami. This particular bottle contains star anise, cloves, cinnamon, chili pepper, black pepper, Mac khen pepper (cousin to Sichuan pepper), fennel seed, cardamom, ginger. So this is more like 9-Spice (haha). Despite the “extra” spice, the philosophy behind this blend is still the same. It reflects the ancient Chinese worldview of balance and harmony. This is the Yin and Yang of spices. These spices are often used in marinades and sauces for most types of meat such as chicken, pork belly and beef.

You get a 1.8 oz bottle of 5 spice powder. This one has a Vietnamese blend. Most 5 spice powders has Chinese origins. The ingredients in this one are star anise, cinnamon, ginger, chili peppers, clove, garlic, black peppers, cardamom, fennel and mac khen peppers. It's a little spicy. Upon opening the bottle, the aroma was exquisite. Very fragrant. You can smell the mixture of the spices. It smelled so fresh. I always add 5 spice to most dishes I cook - stir fries, soups, noodles, meats and fish. It adds that something extra to the final flavor of the dish. 5 spice powder is a very versatile seasoning to have in the kitchen and this bottle is a must have if you love Asian spices.

So excited to receive this spice. Then I find that the bottle isn't properly sealed shut. And no returns available, of course.
