Art in Story: Teaching Art History to Elementary School Children

"Art in Story" is a great resource for anyone who is teaching art to children. I am an art docent at my children's elementary school and I have found this book to be the "go to" book when it comes to talking about artists and their work at an age appropriate level. The stories about the artists are engaging, the information is concise, the resources numerous and the activities are fantastic. This book alone is making me a better docent.This book gives educators as well as volunteers the tools needed to teach children new ways of looking at art, the knowledge base to understand the art, practical hands on activities to reinforce the lesson as well as a great short story to peak the children's interest and keep them engaged.Overall I give this book an A+

Art in Story is a must have for the class room teacher. It will excite and delight the children, give them a better understanding of their culture as it fits into a world culture both historically, artistically, and scientifically. Crossing the disciplines is a very powerful teaching technique and does increase learning. This book makes all of that happen and is lots of fun in the process.I truly wish I had had this book years ago.Sheila Lederer

I absolutely love this book. I home school and I am teaching art classes for my local coop using this text. This book appeals to every type of learner. I love how the standards are incorporated, multiple subject areas are included in each lesson, and the children absolutely love the activities. Sometimes the stories are a bit over a kindergardener's head, but I just modify them a little bit and it seems to work out fine.

Initially I wanted to look for a book that can give me ideas in teaching Art History to Elementary school children, but I find this book a bit boring as the content is not imaginative and exciting enough for me to implement it in my classes. I returned it after only one day of reading through it. I wouldn't recommend this.

This is the BEST resource book I have used for my classes. The stories are wonderful! This is great for my middle school students, its not just for elementary grades.

Really great for high school students at lower reading levels.
