Outstandingly original novel
A briliiant and original novel. The use of 17th century language for the historical narrative is utterly accurate and convincing whilst the darkness which creeps up through the modern sections is like a mist which becomes increasingly murky.

Excellent book
Loved it! Initially quite hard to read but once you get into it it's engrossing - it's two stories which run parallel, one set in the past and one in the present, and the two are entwined.

Boring
It starts with great promise but there is too much 'too-ing and fro-ing' between the time periods to create any real cohesion to the book.

Book Clubs and Hawksmoor
A interesting book to take on in a book club, as the feelings about the book were very wide spread and led to a good discussion. Some thought it 'too intellectual' for them which is a shame, for those interested in languages, the book has a lot to offer in the way Peter Ackroyd attempts to recreate language as he imagines it was historically spoken
