Review: ALIEN-TECHNOLOGY Build for SPACECRAFTS - Hey guys, after a long period with a lot of hassle based on incompatible USB chipsets with Black Magic capture devices I found my new personal holy grail of capture hardware. Here I want to share my experiences with this really cool piece of hardware with you. The manufacture Magewell promises a truly plug and play device. They don't lie! Just connect it via USB to your computer and you are ready to capture. This device don't need any drivers because it works with DirectShow like any webcam does. This capture dongle automatically detects the resolution and framerate of the incoming HDMI Signal and scales it internally to the resolution and framerate you need. I'm using the Resolume VJ Software with the XI100 to bring a live video feed to the audience. Here are some tests I did: Question: What happens with the dongle when you change the input resolution while it playbacks in Resolume? Answer: short black and back to signal! Wuuuaht? Very nice! Question: What happens with the dongle if you pull out the HDMI Cable and re-plug it while it playbacks in Resolume? Answer: black for the period of the disconnected HDMI Cable. After plugging back in the HDMI cable you almost instantly get your signal back. wonderful! Question: What happens if you pull out the USB Cable out of your computer and replug it? Answer: Resolume shows the last frame of the caturestream and does not continues capturing. Hmm. Ok - seriously - that was a hard one...but...just delete the capture clip inside the Resolume clipdeck and drag'n'drop the device inside the clipdeck again. voilá. You don't need to restart Resolume. What shall I say? - This device is so handy and easy to use and sooo compatible. ALIEN-TECHNOLOGY Build for SPACECRAFTS :D ...ehm...sorry...you know what I mean! If you really need a handy and stable capture device ..... TAKE THIS ONE! Best regards M.
Review: Works Great with Ubuntu ver 18.04 ( Linux ) - Installation was literally plugging it in-- HOWEVER: when installing the configuration tool the application "USBCaptureUtility" ends up in "usr/local/bin" .... This had me scratching my head a bit as it seemed at first like it wasn't being installed at all. However, once the executable was discovered, configuration was easy. Running OBS studio found the device, and everything just worked! I am pretty new to using Ubuntu-- And I have to say its amazing what Linux has become. I purchased the Magewell XI100DUSB capture device over the cheaper knock-offs because it supports resolutions of up to 1920x1200 (This is the native resolution of my Cintiq graphics tablet, and the reason I needed this resolution). Setup was a breeze... Set the USBCaptureUtility configuration to the desired resolution.... It then appears as a monitor of that resolution to the computer from which I was capturing/duplicating the cintiq video ( i.e. it looked like a 1920x1200 monitor to the computer being captured. ) Love this product. I have noticed that the device gets only slightly warm. If there was a heat issue, as suggested in some posts I read here, it seems it has been resolved or improved upon. I have my device laying flat upon the top of my computer case, which might be assisting in cooling it. I do not suggest having it buried under stuff or in a place where air can not get to it, none the less.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: How is the latency? Do you notice a delay between your movement and the preview screen in Skype, Hangouts, Wirecast, or XSplit?**
A: I use the magewell for resolume arena the latency is similar to the mini recorder black magic but works better on pc than mac

**Q: Can i use this with a hdmi switcher like this etekcity 4k x 2k 4 port high-speed hdmi to switch from any camera and do live streaming in youtube?**
A: I use it with a 4 port HDMI switcher but not for live streaming. There are several seconds of black screen when I switch the video source. This may have more to do with the video capture software (I use Vidblaster) than the Magewell device. And it doesn't do 4k.

**Q: I need help... sony a6000 to lenovo y50 laptop. Video comes clean out of HDMI to a TV, but all I get is a static picture through the Magewell to comp**
A: I have used the A6000 with this device to multiple computers, with multiple chipsets, and it pulls up in the Windows 10 camera app without a hitch. Be sure your app is set to this video source. When I first used it, I was disappointed in the video quality, but then I realized the laptop defaulted to its internal camera. When I selected the video capture card, the difference made the purchase worthwhile. For extra credit, hook the usb on the A6000 up to the computer as well, and use the Sony remote app to tweak the picture.

**Q: Is this device hdcp compliant?**
A: No. But you can use a cheap HDMI splitter to remove the HDCP 1.4 protection. I have tested this with an OREI HDS-102 (cheap 2x1 1080p60 HDMI splitter) and a PlayStation 4 (with HDCP enabled) successfully

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Quality product and priced that way
*by D***X on April 25, 2020*

The nicest thing about this product is that it just works without any fiddling or fussing. You plug your camera HDMI in and the USB cable out and you have a very high quality webcam. With decent lighting, your Zooms/Hangouts/Skypes look like you are a model in a studio. With more and more business being done by video, this is like dressing for success. All the video conferencing software and OBS recognize your camera flawlessly. The one drawback as others have mentioned is that the metal case heats up in a way that tells you this this little jewel draws some serious USB power. It would be nice if it came with an on/off switch for this price. I am looking into a usb switch or extension as the disconnect point, because you definitely don’t want to leave this plugged in when not in use (especially to a constantly powered USB port), and wearing out the USB connector on an expensive device is not a good idea.
