They are a not very hard plastic. The different sizes fit different rings and as long as your ring fits the size of the adjuster, they are very comfortable to wear

can these be fitted when the ring is on my finger. I need to get the ring over my swollen knuckle first.

I have put them on my ring before on my finger. They are very good but can make skin sore after a while. Before you purchase them have a look at RING COATING GEL. Anti Slip . I have just ordered a tube and I will let you know how it works it will be hopefully softer on my skin. All the best

They are made of very soft plastic,so wouldn't scratch the surface of the ring,i use them constantly on mine,and highly recommend them.
