The Granny Square Card Deck: 50 mix and match designs

Super fantastic! The pictures are clear and the written instructions are easy to follow. There is also a graph. Some of the cards are what I would call duplicates: it’s the same as another, except it has directions for two or more colors.

Fun and practical collection of patterns!

This was just what I was hoping it would be, a lot of Granny square techniques and gorgeous colors on nice thick cards. I I do have to say that the directions on the reverse side are pretty hard to understand at least for me. I find it easier to follow the pictures then try to follow the actual directions. Loved them anyway and I refer to them a lot.

I bought this deck to learn how to crochet granny squares. I consider myself to be at an intermediate level. I was not aware these squares gave directions in a crochet chart. That threw me for a bit of a learning curve. I don’t recall how well I paid attention to the reviews. The booklet included took some time for me to understand. For my questions not answered by the booklet, I watched some YouTube videos, I was able to hack the code. This deck has several stitches I was not familiar with, so I consider that a plus because it taught me new stitches. If I couldn’t figure the stitch out, I went to YouTube in search of a demonstration. Looking through the cards, I found my favorites and stitched them up using Caron Simply Soft. I think they turned out fairly well. I stitched the first square using the chain method for the foundation and didn’t like the large hole it left at the center of the square. Perhaps my technique wasn’t great, so I switched the found chain to a magic circle on the second square and was much more pleased with the results. I give this a 4 star only because I think the booklet should include the written directions for those who have never used a crochet chart for better understanding. I have already recommended this box to a friend who wants to try crochet. I think she would pick up the chart instructions fairly easily.

I love these cards. I am in the middle of my first project. I had a little trouble with the pattern symbols at first but it was easy enough to figure out with the key for the symbols. I do recommend and I will be purchasing other boxes.

The concept of this as a deck is super brilliant and for the most part it does help in the “mix and match” objective of creating your own granny square designs. However, the booklet claims to be written in US crochet terms throughout and that’s not exactly true. First off, the instructions do not use standard Yarn Craft Council terminology (YRH - yarn ‘round hook instead of YOH - yarn over hook… i mean who says ‘round in crochet instructions??) and a ‘Raised Treble Front’ st is actually meant to be a Front Post Double Crochet, which very much conflates UK and US terms. Overall the main square instructions are in chart format on the back of the card, which eliminates the written instructions issues; and there’s a decent stitch chart symbol legend to help you read them but know that you’ll need to be able to decipher stitch charts to create each of the patterns. This is a great idea, but needed to go the extra mile with tech editing and/or an overall editor.

I love this granny square card deck. Nice thick color cards for each design and the stitch grid on the other side. I'm not good at reading stitch charts; however, I can read these just fine and referring to the color photo makes it easy. Love the information in the User Guide booklet. The beginning has a stitch guide in US and UK terms and diagrams. This would make a nice, easy project to do one granny square a week for 50 weeks and then sew them together when finished to make an afghan. Looking forward to picking out yarn and starting the project after my current project is complete. I like it so much, I bought another one to give to my crochet friend for her birthday. So glad I found this gem!

I love using these, especially for inspo. Once you get the hang of one of the designs, it’s easy to adapt it to your preferences. Instructions are super clear and the design options are essentially limitless. I know some people have said they found the cards disappointing because some were duplicates, just with different colors, but I haven’t found any, they all seem to be different.
