Otis Spann Is The Blues

Wow it really bringe the blues into your living room. Got to say it only came to life after upgrading my stylus and cartridge. Before then it sounded a bit flat and lifeless.

This is a great album but you do not get the version with the bonus tracks as advertised on the Amazon site.

This was Otis Spanns first record. And to be honest, on it he hasn't really found his voice. He trying to be too straight a serious bluesman instead of having his normal sense of humour in his lyrics and delivery come to the fore. The piano is amazing, but as an album it's just OK. For a truly great Otis Spann album and a truly great blues CD check out "from the archive " and "the Complete Blue Horizon recordings" (or The Biggest Thing Since Colossus)

Somehow the vinyl feels a little less luxurious than the best reissues. Maybe it's the rough edges. I don't know. There are some low thumps that might be from one of the musicians stomping their foot occasionally, and a little bit of a whooshing sound at the beginning of the sides - it's not the quietest vinyl formulation I guess. But my copy doesn't have any real problems. There were some very minor tics here and there, but no big deal. What is a big deal is the music. I have a couple of other discs with Otis Spann, but this might be my favorite. He and Robert Lockwood Jr just sound huge and powerful on this disc. These are performances I'll enjoy again and again. I hadn't heard this recording before I bought this version, but I am familiar with other Candid recordings from the same era and same studio. I would say that this is an excellent example of the best of what they could do and would consider buying more from this series if the price is right. It's not a true audiophile record, but it's plenty good enough to let the music speak for itself. I see some other people are unhappy with this pressing. I guess it's hit or miss, but mine was a hit!

Non sta a me giudicare l'album che è una cosa stupenda, per rilassarsi e goderselo al massimo. Dal punto di vista "tecnico", l'incisione è molto buona, anche se c'è un leggerissimo e appena percettibile fruscio ma, alla fine, son registrazioni di 54 anni fa!
