In Other Words: Phrases for Growth Mindset: A Teacher's Guide to Empowering Students through Effective Praise and Feedback [Brock, Annie, Hundley, Heather] on desertcart.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. In Other Words: Phrases for Growth Mindset: A Teacher's Guide to Empowering Students through Effective Praise and Feedback Review: Phenomenal intro/recap of growth mindset for parentd and teachers - This book is a fantastic distilling of the two previous books written by the authors (growth mindset coach, and playbook). I own the growth mindset coach and felt like the book was so dense, that it was difficult to fully process and internalize everything as I read it. I set the book aside and have read bits at a time, but I still get overwhelmed with understanding the intricacies of the growth mindset, and how to change from a fixed to growth mindset in the daily moments of life where I find myself stuck in the fixed mindset. I love this book because it takes all of the best parts of the previous books and condenses them down and adds in things that were missed in the first books. Very specific tools are given, including exact phrases that are fixed, and what to say instead, in dozens of situations. The book is much more thorough than the table of contents would lead one to believe. The book is small but it is packed with useful information. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the growth mindset- whether you know nothing about it, or you want a refresher on how to incorporate it into your daily life. Review: Development like this is instrumental in changes for our education system ... - Carol Dweck’s concepts of fixed mindset and growth mindset and how the way we “encourage” or praise students can affect their education is one I believe in fully. This book is an incredible guide if you will to connecting and communicating with students. So often, teachers focus on education (as they should) and not enough on how to communicate that education to their students, they often drop the ball. This book does an incredible job of helping parents, teachers, youth directors, and other educators on how to develop growth mindsets, rather than ruin them. Development like this is instrumental in changes for our education system and having a book like this will be a game changer. The different sections - selftalk, teacher to student, peer-to-peer, school to home and so forth will truly help transform the cutlure of education as well as empower students. The breakdown of midnsets that are fixed vs. growth is incredible. This book is not just empowering for students but also for ourselves - I highly recommend this book for anyone looking to enlighten themselves as an educator! So good!

but it’s really great for parenting as well
I really wish my school had used these methods. Of course, they’re new so they couldn’t have. Basically, this book not only is helpful for the classroom, but it’s really great for parenting as well. Maybe there’s a parenting version out there, I don’t know, but things like not having a poster reading “practice makes perfect” is not a good thing because sometimes practice does NOT make perfect. And when you’ve worked really hard and still suck at math, that can be really frustrating and lead to just not trying anymore at all. I like the incorporation of affirmations. I’m really trying to use those already. In any case, this is great for both teachers, parents, and shoot anyone trying to become a happier person.

Language of the growth mindset
I first encountered the concept of a growth mindset during a leadership tutoring session with one of my students, and I became completely obsessed. “In Other Words” gives a solid introduction of the two mindsets- “fixed mindset” and “growth mindset.” Then it dives into the language you can use to cultivate the growth mindset both in your classroom and in your life. Primarily created for those in a classroom setting, the book offers situational examples to guide you to a deeper and applicable understanding of the growth mindset. While most examples are made for classroom use, the concept of the growth mindset, and particularly the “self talk” section of the book is valuable content for people in all walks of life. Throughout, the book is infused with strategies on language to use to incorporate the growth mindset into your every day life. This book gives you language you need to bring the growth mindset to life in your community.

I'm a huge fan of this theory of the "fixed" and "growth" mindsets. I really like how this book distills the salient parts of the fixed/growth mindsets theory and makes it applicable to daily in-school use. It's frequently difficult to take over-arching theories and put them into practice, but this book does an excellent job of presenting common scenarios and then walking the reader through how the fixed/growth mindset applies. It's a must-have for anyone who engages regularly with students.

Strategies that make a Difference
As a teacher, I have been very aware of Carol Dweck’s concepts of fixed mindset and growth mindset and how the way we “encourage” or praise students can affect their ability to push through when learning gets hard. The phrases in this book will be incorporated into my classroom immediately, especially the if/then statements that are so action oriented for students – giving them the strategies that will make a difference. I also intend to write the process praise statements on cards to use until these become second nature to me. Praising my student’s effort is still encouraging and creating the safe, friendly environment I want, without praising the person, but what they did. I am going to make sure I have both the process praise noted and the process critique statements, since I often have trouble encouraging when things are tough for a student. I intend to share this book with all of my team-mates, it will make such a difference for our students.

Quick, effective read for teachers
Effective book for teachers looking for examples of how to encourage a growth mindset in their students (and themselves). I purchased a copy of this book for my staff based on the recommendation of one of my teachers and a quick skimming read. On a deeper reading, I'm even happier about that decision! I'm excited to see how our students grow when we are better equipped to meet their needs!
