How much to use in a half gallon

It depends on what you are using it for. If you are diluting it to 3% then I dilute the 12% to 6% with an equal amount of water, and then dilute the 6% with an equal amount of water to get 3%. OR --- 4 oz of water to 4 oz of 12 % peroxide is 8 oz of 6% peroxide; 8 oz of 6% peroxide mixed with 8 oz of water is 16 oz of 3% peroxide. Most household uses don't call for more than 3% peroxide, but you can figure out what percentage you want and mix it with water accordingly. I keep a "whitening bucket" filled with water, some detergent, about 4oz of 12% peroxide in which I toss my white laundry items - wash cloths, dish towels, socks, bras, handkerchiefs, undershirts, T-shirts, and so on. Anything that needs whitening goes into the bucket and the entire bucket goes into the washing machine.

I want to brighten the surface of a bathtub that has a non-slip coating in areas, which has discolored, will this help?

It works like a bleach. I would mix it half the hydrogen peroxide and half with water. Try a small area and see how it works. Mix only a small amount for the first time.
