It also provides a quick summary of the different types of mediums you can use to color your horse, and how these mediums would affect the look of your finished picture. However, it would definitely need to be supplemented with other drawing books if you would like to get into more detail, or if you need more extensive information.I do like that this book breaks down how to draw the horse in each of its potential movements or activity, such as its gaits, jumping, or with a rider. Plus, five types of breeds are reviewed. Also, for all those young girls, or women who still are girls at heart like me, I really like that this book offered a page on Unicorns and Pegasus. As another reviewer had mentioned, the cartoon horse section seemed a little "silly," but that is only because I don't draw cartoons. It would be helpful for anyone who does like animation. The biggest drawback is that this book does not offer a step-by-step instruction on how the underlying basic structure of the horse was drawn. There are books out there that will give you with this type of instruction that, in my opinion, are much more helpful to a beginning artist than just showing the end product of circles, lines, and triangles.This book is good, but I wouldn't expect to see any full elaboration or extreme detail on any one topic. It uses the various approaches of simplified lines/shapes to create the basic shape and illustrates some examples of shading and coloring that help inspire more realistic techniques. The cartoon-style horses are a little silly, but might help very young artists feel less discouraged if their early attempts don't look just like the realistic ones in the book. Our children 5 and 7 yrs. tried this book and both got something out of it.
