This is our second one after we used the previous one 16 years and had it repaired twice. These come with a "water conditioner" cartridge that is supposed to prevent scale build up. Unfortunately, these cartridges are super expensive at 3 for around $80 dollars. They also cause the iron to perform badly. They offer so much resistance that the water won't flow through them and the iron constantly thinks it is out of water even though the tank is full. We took this out and now the iron performs like a Laura Star should. Avoid the cartridges. 12/17/2024 Update. Well we have owned this iron only 1 1/2 years. This iron is only warranted for one year, and unfortunately, just after the warranty was up the unit failed completely with a foul smell of something electrical burning. Unit went completely dead. I might have expected that from a lesser iron, but LuadraStar used to build a quality product, but apparently not any more. For a $1000+ product to fail in a little over a year is really unacceptable. I had a previous LauraStar product that lasted over 15 years. Clearly the quality is not the same. Very disappointed.
