Trapped in Paradise

An underrated Christmas movie
I watched this growing up & must have gotten attached to the voices. Dana Carvey's laugh, Nick Cage's reprimanding. Plus the John Lovits & the grandma are funny as well.

Just the facts...
Don't watch this movie unless you love Christmas and love seeing people with the true Spirit of "selfless giving" in action. Because not only is it a fun and funny movie with loads of talent, it has the best Christmas scenes too! Seeing the people give their gifts to these 3 brothers just because they are in need of dry clothes after they end up crashing into the river, is so awesome! It's all part of the movie, that the people they stole from are the nicest people in the world, and truly celebrate Christmas in their hearts. It makes these 3 end up doing the right thing. But before they do, you'll be laughing more than once. At first you think no one could be that stupid, but thats why 2 of them were in Prison, but it works, the talent just makes it work, but mostly its just great fun. This movie is so re watchable, every year I enjoy it as one of the first Christmas movies I watch, just as the season nears. It isnt "only" about Christmas, but Christmas is played into it, so in a roundabout way, it's more of a Christmas movie than most proclaimed Christmas movies! They even get to evade the cops at one part by making off in a horse drawn sleigh, its just one more Chrismassy effect and thats part of how it stays so seasonal. If you dont like this movie, you were probably already miserable and nothing would have made you happy anyway! which is probably why some people give it only one or two stars. Nicolas Cage plays the straight guy, which works fine, and I'm sure there really are two characters out there somewhere in the world just like his 2 brothers, played by Lovitz and Carry. In that sense its believable. This would have easily been a 4 star movie, but some scenes are just too excellent, so you just have to throw that fifth star in there. Whether you buy it, rent it, or get it loaned for free, you'll enjoy it if you watch it! This is a movie that if my DVD got smashed somehow, I'd definitely buy another one. Dont be afraid to go for it. My only regret is they don't make more movies like this one!! and thats a fact. matter of fact, its certainly a one of a kind flick.

Great
Great Xmas movie! It’s old enough to be free I’d think. But still worth the cost of the rental.

Amusing Christmas Parable
I saw Trapped in Paradise when it first came out, and then recently decided to revisit with my wife, as she had never seen it and I remembered finding it pretty funny when it first came out. After viewing it years later, it's still pretty amusing. It should probably be more like 3.5 stars instead of four, but Amazon don't play that way, so we will go with 3 and err on the side of caution.Trapped in Paradise falls into the trope of Christmas redemption movies, wherein three brothers (played by Nic Cage, Dana Carvey, and Jon Lovitz) in varying stages of moral decay decide to rob a small town bank on Christmas Eve. Things go haywire, of course, and the brothers are forced to come to terms with who they are and how their actions impact others. The humor is all over the place, but usually is in the form of quips between the brothers, which is sometimes smile-worthy, but falls short when compared to the circumstantial humor and site-gags, which play out better. Also, it has to be said that this IS a Nic Cage movie, with all that entails. He's just as over the top here as he is anywhere else. If you don't like Nicholas Cage (or cannot tolerate him), then you probably won't like this movie. Dana Carvey comes off a little over the top, but then settles into his role as the movie progresses. His character here is nowhere near the quality of Garth Algar or George Herbert Walker Bush impersonation, but it's likable. And that's a good word for this movie: likable. It's not hilarious, it's not the greatest Christmas tale ever told, and it's not even particularly well acted (the town members are probably the best actors in the bunch). It also suffers for an unnecessary and poorly-explained romance between Nic Cage and one of the townsfolk, but that's Hollywood for you. Despite these shortcomings, the movie overall feels complete and of good cheer. Worth it if you're looking for something different this holiday season, or just want to pull an old Nic Cage movie out of the vault.

Good film, not the greatest comedy ever.
This film is worth watching but by no means the best film ever made. Great character acting on the whole with some overacting by characters then and now.The film is basically three brothers decide after one heard in prison of a fortune of cash in a twee town in "lemax" Christmas village, that the local bank is worth a heist and brimming with dosh! Some great set peices such as the sleigh robbery and the trek over to the coffee shop for the safe keys ( end up bringing the whole café back with them). In the end the most important thing to them is the girl and redemption from all their collective years on the wrong side of Johnny law.Buy it? Yes. One for the Christmas film viewing.

Underrated and overlooked.
This should be essential Christmas viewing. Like many festive favourites it's not actually a brilliant film. It just has a certain something. It's the story of the rehabilitation of three rogues who rob the town bank and then fail to escape the town boundaries for various reasons. The longer they're in the town, the more kindly folk they meet and the more disposed to good they become.Nic Cage plays Bill Firpo, a guy struggling to make ends meet and also struggling to play it straight unlike his two jailbird brothers (Jon Lovitz and Dana Carvey). When he meets them on their release from prison they con him into helping them commit a bank robbery. A perfect robbery on account of the fact that the bank is a small town one staffed by trusting hicks with minimal securityDespite the robbery being a walkover everything else goes wrong and circumstance piles upon circumstance to ensure that our anti heroes remain in town and need ever more help from the people that they have robbed. Of particular note is the sequence where they crash their car and get picked up by a good samaritan who ferries them straight to the bank president's house where they are plied with clothes and dinner. During the dinner conversation they learn what consequences their robbery will have for the bank and the town. Watching them squirm as the implications of their actions sink in is an uncomfortable delight. The pace of the film never really lets up as the brothers are pursued by Richard Jenkins's FBI agent, the cons who were originally going to rob the bank and a couple of rogue hick deputies. Their attempts to escape involve a car, a boat and a horse drawn sleigh which adds an extra touch of originality to the car chase.Cage is good. Lovitz and Carvey are a tad irritating but redeem themselves in the end.It could have been corny but it manages to escape that trap. Definitely one for the Christmas shelf in your DVD cabinet.

Trapped in tedium!
I can't for a moment imagine how anyone could describe this as movie as `hilarious' as described in several reviews? But there's no accounting for taste and this movie obviously appeals to some. It's basically a slapstick updated take on the old three stooges concept with Nicolas Cage being the straight man (Bill) to his gormless and exceedingly irritating two brothers. I suppose for those who enjoy that genre of movie then it's fine, give it a go.Bill's brothers are released on parole and immediately con him into helping them rob a vulnerable small town bank. But the script is lightweight, trite and very predictable. Yes, it had its mildly amusing moments, but insufficient to alleviate the tedium.Every character is somewhat of a caricature. Presumably, this is intended as the basis of the humour but in practice merely comes across as a tired spoof of the fifties movies.I purchased the DVD on the basis of the good reviews, hoping that Nicolas Cage gave it some credibility. It didn't work for me, and it's not one I'll keep in my Christmas collection!

Pleasant Christmas fare
Though an old Nicolas Cage film, it is still watchable as a pleasant Christmas film with all the old fashioned charm of good overcoming evil in time for Christmas. Don't expect any tension or drama in a film about inept bank robbers trying to make their way out of the little town of Paradise, filled with only the nicest people. It's goofy, full of holes and impossibilities. My favourite cameo star is the brother's Mom, played by Florence Stanley and Merlin, the sleigh-pulling horse. Very good value from Amazon UK at under 4 pounds.

First time viewing its brill
When I didnt know nicholas cage the first time I watched it, it was funny, not predictable excellent film. But second time, his acting was a bit distracting. I shd have kept the memory of my childhood film rather than trying to relive.
