Marshall AS50D 50W Acoustic Soloist Combo Amplifier

Whoever worked out how this amp gets used at gigs and also at home - nailed it! The controls are very intuitive and you can pretty much work out how to do everything by just reading the dials. However a quick read (its short) of the instructions will give you a couple of other ideas for how to mix the reverb between voice and guitar channels (0% to 100%) and that the buttons are on off for the chorus. Don't forget that like other chorus pedals the knobs kind of work opposite each other - so turn up depth and turn down speed and vice versa - turn them both up beyond halfway and you are into warble territory - don't worry all chorus effects work like that. The amp has plenty of volume for bluegrass, folk, finger-style, jazz, and singing - so long as the venue isn't too big. (You'll be fine in Pizza Hut for 80 people, but not in the Butlins' Restaurant for 3000 - use the DI out and a monster PA!) The volume knobs on each channel pretty much control the input levels - the master volume on the right controls the overall volume of the amp. So turn that one down for home use and up when you're on a gig. The finish seems to be very rugged as all Marshall amps and although the speaker cloth is fairly light, it's well protected by the overall design and it's also not spanning a lot of space as it only has to cover a baffle board with just a couple of 8"s and a tweeter. The amp feels a bit heavy, but is quite small - like a squat Deluxe Reverb - but feels like half the weight - its actually16 Kilos- about 33 lbs. OK from the car to the venue with a guitar and stuff in the other hand - but you wouldn't want to lugging this around the London tube. Let's say OK for 400 yards max (for me that is, but I am 71.) As a retired pro guitar teacher that's owned a whole lot of amps over the years I can definitely recommend this amp. Although it's a Marshall, there's nothing 'Marshally' about its sound - it just gets a whole lot of economies of scale from being a well known brand that sells a shed load of amps. So don't be an amp snob and only consider amps from acoustic related brands or immediately opt for a £1000+ top end one either. This is well worth a listen. It does the job, you won't get paranoid on a gig cause it doesn't cost an arm and a leg, it's easy to work with, sounds just great to the audience, and its loud enough for about 80. (You might want to get yourself an amp stand to get it up around waist height as its projects better than on the floor at a gig and you can reach the controls much easier.) Great piece of kit. Warm sound. Even with just the two channels, I rigged up my silver bullet harmonica mic., a Shure SM58 vocals mic, an electro acoustic and a backing track via my iPhone all at once for a blues jam. Nice retro look. The front cover is fine for me but for moving around to gigs would maybe have been more robust with a solid grill.

Very well manufactured, high performing amplifier which is just perfect for the kind of electro acoustic guitar I am using right now. Clean, bright, sparkling tones that have warmth and depth, with a variety of options through the chorus and reverb functions to create a fatter sound. Amp is not heavy and so quite portable. I haven't used the microphone channel yet, but plan to soon.

Partner very pleased with the amp. He has wanted one for a long time and it sounds superb. Doesn't disappoint. Good price on Amazon compared to other retailers.

I sing, and play 12-string electro-acoustic guitar with FX. I wanted a combo that would go loud and clear, especially with vocals. There are no fancy tricks here, just reverb, a surprisingly good chorus, two anti-feedback measures and a basic EQ. If you need a tiny amp that you can carry with one finger, look elsewhere. This thing is solid. It's not the most elegant design you'll see but for the money it looks and sounds good to me. I took a star away for two reasons. The on/off switch was dodgy and I had it replaced. That made me wonder whether it would let me down in other ways. It has not. Then I spent some time comparing it with a Laney A-Duo. The chorus on that one is disappointing but for overall sound quality, on guitar and vocals, it is better. It is, however, very fiddly to use. The Marshall AS50D is not a bad amp at all. For a similar sum of money, though, there are several excellent units out there. I happen to like this one for the simplicity of use and the big, rich sound that it makes.

Great bit of kit, always wanted a Marshall amp from being a youngster going to gigs (i'm in now in my 60's) a very happy man, great sound and the chorus mix gives an impressive addition to the guitar.

Really didn't wanna buy a Marshall for the acoustics but so glad I did. Most acoustic amps have separate EQ setups with different parameters for the xlr mic set up which I don't use. This amp allows me to have my 6 string in one channel and my 12 string in the other with effects and levels at one central mix to match tones to both guitars. Then use the line out to the board which saves an input line on the mixer. This also allows for better stage sound as to not rely on the monitor mix too much. The louder volume can resonate with acoustics causing a low impedance humm if you are not careful with the guitar volume. If you play in a band and don't want or need a vocal mix this amp is perfect.

As always...Marshall amps produce incredible sound...excellent price and high quality that is expected from a Marshall
