My daughter is slim and does not have large calves, so it was no problem for her. Getting them on and off the very first time was a challenge, and I had visions of how much horse dung I was going to get all over myself after she wore them for real! But this fear did not materialize. My daughter is able to take these on and off by herself with minimal effort. In fact she can use her feet to get them off, thus eliminating the horse poo everywhere scenario. I couldn't be happier. I had a pair of rubber boots while I was still growing as a kid and my dad would take a tire shine spray and polish them up nice for shows.
