OK, it's not Rain Plans II. But is that what we need or what Mr N wants to give us ? I suspect not. Rain Plans was a slow burner and consequently I have bided my time before posting a review of Silver Season. I've looked at other reviews here but don't read the music press so this is simply my opinion. This is another strong, strong album. Don't listen to it in your car, you'll miss a lot of the action. It's well produced and all the better for being a bit cleaner sounding than Rain Plans. Based on the evidence the studio they built to record this album can be judged a success. It's hard to pick a favourite track here due to the overall strength. If I was pushed I'd probably plump for L.A. Lately (particularly nice bass work) with Strangers a close second. Overall the sound seems to have evolved/matured since RP. Probably as a result of the touring schedule. Quality vocal harmonies are liberally distributed throughout and the combination of pedal steel and psychodelic tinged guitar is better than ever. It's not entirely cheese free, but life would be pretty dull without cheese. Go and see em live next year: you won't be disappointed.

This bears repeated listens and improves over time. Very Neil Young-like but what is wrong with that? Overall a very good composite album.

- lovely music, -probably my best purchase CD of 2018. Israel is a very underrated artist having gathered a very competent band around himself, - he should be far better known than he is in the UK. If you think early Neil Young but with a smoother voice and better guitarist you will be part way there, - not knocking NY, he has an amazing place in music history, but this was the nearest comparison that I could think of. Some haunting tunes on this album, - great for a bit of background or up loud with headphones on! Look him up YT to get a taste.

I don`t know if it was through high expectations, some very strong reviews in the monthly music press or just through over familiarity to his last record but I am just slightly underwhelmed with Silver season. I`ve lived with it for a few days and given the songs time to sink in but for some reason i`m not feeling the love for this album that given its constituent parts I would normally be lapping up This album is very similar to Rain Plans but there are two differences :- firstly Israels voice is very low in the mix making the lyrics almost irrelevant, (the album is crying out for a lyric sheet) and secondly the tunes/songs just are not as good as they were on Rain plans. All things in perspective, there is still a great sound to this record and in particular the guitar playing from Midlakes Joey Mc Clellen is very enjoyable also the songs that make up the middle part of this album LA Lately/ Lavendula are probably as good as anything this year from this style of music. In Summary, not as good as his last album nor similar releases such as Midlakes "Antiphon" / My Morning Jackets "Waterfall" but still a enjoyable record in its own right .

Great album, very prompt delivery. Like Neil Young, early 1970's LA rock? You'll love this. Just enough originality to not be mere pastiche.

If you like the sound of his labelmates Midlake mixed with some early period Neil Young, this is for you. Great album.

Je ne connaissais pas Israël Nash, sinon à travers un titre entendu dans les Nocturnes. J'ai donc acheté toute sa discographie pour me faire une idée plus complète de cet artiste et je ne regrette pas!

....steckt der Schlüssel zu dieser Aufnahme tatsächlich im Innenteil des Digi-Files: See The Beauty That Surrounds You - er meint das so, wortwörtlich. Wie sehr das gilt, zeigt Nash nicht alleine in seinen Kompositionen, das sind alles fein gedrechselte Melodien in gewohnter Israel Nash - das Gripka hat er fallen lassen - Qualität. Die Schönheit dieser Aufnahme - und damit allerdings auch ihr ungewöhnlicher, ja geradezu gewöhnungsbedürftiger Charakter - wird erst erfahrbar, wenn sich der Hörer der Mühe unterzieht mit gespitzten Ohren vor einer qualitativ hochwertigen Anlage knapp 50 Minuten still und aufmerksam zu verharren, um all den, der Aufnahme immanenten, Klangelementen nachzuhorchen. Und diese Klangelemente haben's wirklich in sich, machen sich nicht alleine in den Stimmfarben der einzelnen Instrumente bemerkbar, sondern zudem auch noch in deren Anordnung und Räumlichkeit: Drum, Bass und akustische Gitarre stehen direkt, geradezu naturalistisch klingend im Vordergrund, irgendwo zwischen Box und Hörer, live und analog sozusagen. Hinter diesen, die Musik eigentlich vorantreibenden, Komponenten kreiseln Steels durch die Weiten des Hintergrunds und passieren in ihren ungleichmäßigen Kreisbewegungen hin und wieder direkt des Hörers Ohren. Nur eigentlich vorantreiben tun die Rhythmus-Instrumente das Ganze, denn es findet in geradezu epischer Breite und langsam vor sich hinfließend statt. Diese Verhaltenheit wird noch verstärkt durch völlig verhallte E-Gitarren, die, in ihrer räumlichen Anordnung noch hinter allen Steels platziert - also ganz weit entfernt - ihre Solo-Läufe irgendwo in noch verhalltere ätherische Sphären schicken. Und überhaupt Hall - der hält, mit Ausnahme der Drums und der A-Gitarre, die gesamte Aufnahme zusammen, oder genauer gesagt alles das, was den Hintergrund bildet. Und dabei ist nicht so ganz klar, wozu eigentlich Nash's Stimme zählt: sie spannt sich nämlich wie ein mehrstimmiger, fast wie ein Chor klingender Bogen über alles - zusammen mit dem Mellotron, das sie zeitweilig unterlegt....ein Country-Mellotron unter einem chorartigen Stimmarrangement - wo hätte es das jemals im Country gegeben?! Pink Floyd Produktionen funktionierten zeitweise so - aber Country?! Denn nichts anderes ist diese Musik: walzender Country - nur eben in einem etwas seltsamen Gewand und in für Countryverhältnisse verschachtelten Klangräumen, was ihr aber eben auch ihre Besonderheit verleiht. Allerdings scheinen in Nash's Silver Season die trabenden oder galoppierenden Zossen der Country-Vergangenheit längst durch Sun-Ships ersetzt. Doch, doch - die Songs stimmen, auch wenn ihre Qualität in all den Klanggebirgen eine Weile benötigt, um sich durchzusetzen. Alles ist weit mehr komplexer und vieldimensionaler Klangraum, als einfach nur lineare Musik. Zudem ist die Stimme Nashs wie immer ein wenig zu hell gefärbt, der Sound kann, hört man ihn nicht differenziert, reichlich nerven und ein oberflächliches Hören ordnet Silver Season wohl automatisch solch scheinbaren Referenz-Aufnahmen wie Neil Youngs Harvest Moon oder Prairie Wind zu - die für mich keine Referenzaufnahmen darstellen. Überhaupt könnte wieder der Eindruck einer Neil Young 2.0 Version entstehen - und doch trifft's das nicht: in seiner Gesamtkonstruktion, in seinen Klangschichtungen, in der unglaublichen Analog-Qualität der Aufnahme, und trotz aller technischer Produktions-Gimmicks, ist das im Ganzen eine ziemlich einzigartige Country-Aufnahme, der man vielleicht mit dem Begriff "psychedelisch" gerecht wird - vielleicht... Mit all den beschriebene Eigenschaften und Qualitäten entzieht sich das "Werk" geradezu jeder Beurteilungsmöglichkeit: entweder man ist hin und weg von den beschrieben sich öffnenden Klangräumen oder die Tür bleibt einfach verschlossen und es geht einen definitiv nichts an. Ein Dazwischen gibt es nicht. Eine Tür öffnet sich und man geht hindurch in einen neuen bislang unbekannten Raum - oder man lässt es bleiben. In jedem Fall stellt sich eine eindeutige Bedeutungsverschiebung innerhalb des einleitend zitierten "See The Beauty That Surrounds You" ein: ist man zunächst geneigt die Schönheit hervorzuheben, ist es letztlich doch eher die erzeugte, alles umschließende Klang-Räumlichkeit die verblüfft.... ...und doch stellt sich mir, quasi als Nachhall, die Frage, wie diese Songs klingen würden, spielte sie Nash nochmals in einer Stimme-und-akustische-Gitarre-Version ein - was bliebe von ihnen übrig, würden sie so auch noch bestehen?! Ein interessantes Experiment...irgendwann live in Holland.

Gran bel disco stile west-coast. Consigliato a tutti gli amanti del genere, ottimamente cantato da Israel in modo convincente e credibile e suonato in modo eccellente dai musicisti che lo accompagnano (in evidenza la slide guitar). Anche il precedente album Rain Plans si fa amare.

4.5 stars - This is a very strong follow-up to last years amazing "Rain Plains". That release would still be a better place to start if you have not yet heard of Israel Nash, however this new collection of songs is well worth the price of admission and does not disappoint. Israel and his band delve deeper into the trippy-psychedelic roots sounds, conjuring up images of a more spacey early '70's Laurel Canyon. The lyrics and soaring pedal steel mix perfectly with the early Pink Floyd-like melodies and slight rock edge. My only real critical observation is that the tempo of the songs have a slight sameness and the album seems to lack that one breakthrough extended guitar jam, although "Strangers" comes real close. This is really a minor point since there are many nuances and tones worth checking out in each carefully crafted song. Kick back and let the sounds wash over you - a fine mellow & intense musical journey!

ミズーリ州出身のシンガーソングライターIsrael Nash Gripka、4作目となるスタジオLP。 前作の流れをくむサイケなフォークロック。 Neil Youngを彷彿させる存在感、メロトロン、ペダルスティールを多用した前作以上の浮遊感、CSN的な幾重にも重なるコーラスにて築き上げられた70sサイケ、フォークロック。 個人的にはデビュー時のようなもう少しシンプルなロックの方が好みではあるが、ロックの醍醐味が詰まった良いアルバム。 素晴らしい個性だ。
