We had a fly hatching inside our home and it was terrifying! Several hundred flies gathered in our upper windows causing a swarming sound that drove us crazy. We thought our only option would be to fumigate the house but as a quick and cheap first try at a home grown solution was to buy this light trap and see how it goes. In the first few hours it caught a hundred or so flies but 100 out of 2000 wasn't going to finish the job. We left it overnight and once the sun went down and the light trap was the only light source in the house, it started to catch hundreds every couple of hours. By the next morning I had 4 sheets entirely covered with 200 hundred or so flies each. Today I don't hear any buzzing and there's only a couple flies in the second floor hallway that I bet will get caught tonight seeing as the sticky pad was full last night so they couldn't get trapped. 5/5 stars, would recommend. I might even buy another to place upstairs during the changing of the seasons when this annual fly-pocalypse typically occurs. I'm glad this product came with 5 sheets but that only lasted about 24 hours. I wish I had at least 10 to start out with to get through the first wave of flies without having to immediately order refills at $1.30 a sheet. Flies find this thing irresistible. I live in a dense neighborhood in the south by a pond. Flies are bad every summer, but this year has be horrible. It had gotten so bad this year that there was a constant low drone from the buzzing of the flies. We'd tried everything to get rid of them and couldn't find anything that worked. There was no obvious point of ingress we could locate. Fly paper strips were most effective, but barely made a dent. That's when I found this product. The first day, I just had it propped up on the countertop and plugged in. 24 hours later when I went to mount it, the first glue board was completely full, and there was a noticeable reduction in the number of flies in the house. I mounted the trap above the kitchen window, replaced the glue board, and plugged it in. Now, less than a day later, the second glue board is nearly full, and there are barely any flies left in the house. And it's also catching a bunch of gnats as well that I had barely noticed. Flies will make a beeline for the trap and dive straight in. Some of them will fly down so fast that they make a literal "thud" when they hit the glue board. It obviously works best at night when it's the only light on in the room, but it will even work in a brightly lit room. After I mounted it to the wall and plugged it in, it had caught half a dozen in a well lit room within the 5 minutes it took me to clean my workspace and put away my tools. Something about the UV makes them go crazy. It also makes an effective night light. It dimly casts in the room, giving just enough light to make out objects and shapes. I chose this over similar but lower priced models because unlike the other models, I could actually find replacement glue boards for purchase. It's worth every penny for how well it works, but I still consider it a bit overpriced for what it is. Even with the high price tag, I would gladly pay it again after seeing it in action.

Is this a device you want? Well, and this is very important, what exactly are the types of insects you are hoping to get rid of? This device is good at removing SMALL flying insects that are ATTRACTED TO UV. That means you'll get gnats and fruit flies. It's a nice addition to a kitchen because it stops the fruit flies that might congregate near a garbage can or a fruit basket. And the glue trap means you don't get started by occasional zaps that are spreading bits of vaporized fly over your kitchen. But what won't it get? It won't get house flies (ie the larger flies that are around 1/3 of an inch long). Those are attracted to the light but usually strong enough to escape the glue trap. Likewise for moths (but I have nothing against moths, so I don't mind that!) And it usually won't get mosquitos because mosquitos aren't drawn by UV light, they're drawn by a combination of warmth, CO2, and octenol. So what can you do? What I did was to also put a fly-zapping bulb somewhere else in the house, far from the kitchen, and where I normally wouldn't hear it, to hopefully attract and zap the large flies that get into the house. I also put outside the house a specifically designed mosquito lamp that slowly warms up an octenol patch to attract the mosquitos. That' something you want outside the house, if possible a fair distance away! Nothing worse than attracting the mosquitos into the house and then having some of them veer off course when they notice a tasty human snack nearby!!! So, once you understand what this lamp is and is not for, what else can I say? It's fairly easy to mount, and it's light, so you don't have to be especially paranoid about how you mount it. (But you will probably mount it close to an electrical socket -- so be careful before you start drilling to check the wall for how that power cable runs through the wall...) It MIGHT be light enough to mount with nanotape or something similar like some contact strips. I've had success with those for similarly weighted items. But be careful, there are two issues that made me not do that for this item: - it's always on, and while not hot, it is slightly warming. Taping things that stay permanently warm usually fails after a few weeks to months because the warmth degrades the tape "glue". - it's fragile in the sense that it has a UV bulb in it! Some things, if they were to fall from being taped up, no big deal, you examine what went wrong and try again. But if this thing falls and hits the ground, at the very least the bulb will shatter, and quite likely the contacts will also be so bent as to be useless... Once mounted, it's great. The light is barely visible (I mounted it a little higher than eye level specifically so it would be essentially hidden.) At first the UV bulb had a flicker (barely noticeable, but there if you looked at it carefully). That seems to have gone away after about two weeks. Even when it was happening it wasn't an issue, but it might be more irritating if your situation forced you to mount it at eye level or lower. To make it look cleaner, I put a raceway over the cable. This was the first time I've used a raceway and you can see the mistake I made -- I just eyeballed trying to line up two pieces to make a long vertical run, because I didn't even think this was an issue. Don't make my mistake! It's very easy to slightly misalign the two pieces! Tie a piece of tight string , or use a long ruler to draw yourself a long straight line, so that you can get the raceway pieces nicely aligned. The one I was shipped also came with the logo tilted at about 30 degrees relative to the sconce which drove me crazy. Hence the Apple sticker (I had one sitting around, and it was the correct size and shape!) :-) Addition after 5 years or so: I now have two of these and I remain very happy with them. However you need to be aware that they are somewhat "consumables". The UV bulbs last 2..3 years and the sconce itself (I'm guessing actually some sort of power transformer or something in the sconce?) lasts about 4 years.

This really lives up to its description. I have had mine for several years and I gifted this one for my friend after she visited me. You need this size in order to get the flies. It’s also convenient as a night light. I highly recommend this product.

Does not kill flies. I just watched a fly walk across the zapper and then fly away. Terrible waste of money.

We bought this to deal with the usual summer influx of house flies / black flies in our area, they always seem to sneak in the sliding door and hangout in the kitchen with the rest of us. While this light attracts mayflies, fruit flies, fungus gnats, and moths like nobody's business, we haven't had a single house fly get trapped, even though we can see them flying around the light. Quality and ease of install were great, and like others have said it's a bit silly they didn't cut a hole in the housing for the cord to go through, leaving it hanging out strangely to the side. All in all pretty effective, but not worth it for the one thing we were hoping it would address.

I was pretty excited to get this new weapon. The war I have been fighting this year against the horde of winged demons was beginning to slowly drive me mad. This year in particular has been extremely terrible with flies, and they besieged my home with their filthy, sanity-sucking presence. I had flashbacks of playing one of the original Sims games, where too many flies in a home might trigger a fatal fly-attack event and kill your Sim. Some small part of me kind of feared for my life when I would stir the horde near the trash cans. I had already thinned a lot of them out by the time this arrived, but this is Texas. Texas flies don't give up. They like to hang out in our garage, which is attached to our kitchen. We let dogs in and out frequently from there, so flies have a lot of opportunity to get in. I hooked this baby up, set it up above my trash can in the kitchen, and walked away for just a few minutes. I came back and there was already two losers who had fallen for the trap. Then we lost power from the traditional Texas thunderstorms. The flies got a reprieve.... I didn't think I'd catch many as a result. The power came back on around 2am, and so did the light. By 8am I got up, checked the light, and hallelujah! Several, maybe another 8-10 flies, and some gnats had fallen for the trap already despite it being off half the night. Eager to see how many it catches throughout the day while they are more active. I work in an emergency animal hospital and we have a couple of similar fly lights (different brand and style, but same concept), which is why I went with this myself. Simple design that works. No loud zapping noises (although I kind of wanted a zapper for the satisfaction of hearing them be obliterated, I didn't want to smell of crispy bugs), really easy to install (I used nails for now until I decide if I want to anchor it more permanently somewhere), and the unit looks nice other than the cord dangling down from the wall. I believe it can be directly tied into the electrical lines to avoid this, which I may have done eventually if I can harrass my former-electrician boyfriend into doing it after I decide on a permanent location. All and all, very satisfied with my new fly control. I may buy another one for the flies who venture deeper into the house and get lost in the bedrooms and bathrooms.
