If you heat your home with oil, you need this device. I spent years walking down to a cold, dark basement to squint at an old, yellowed float gauge that I wasn't even sure was working. After installing the Smart Oil Gauge Duo, I honestly don't know how I managed without it. Here is why this is an easy 5-star product: 1. Installation was surprisingly easy. I am handy, but I’m not a plumber. I was a little nervous about messing with the oil tank, but the installation took me maybe 15 minutes. The instructions are crystal clear. You essentially just unscrew a plug on your tank (make sure you have a decent pipe wrench) and screw this in (with some pipe dope on the threads). The app walks you through the Wi-Fi setup and configuring your tank size (I have a standard 275-gallon vertical) step-by-step. 2. I looked at the original model, but I went with the Duo because of the dual ultrasonic sensors. It feels incredibly reliable. It ignores "echoes" from the sides of the tank and gives a precise reading. Old Float Gauge: "Looks like maybe 1/4 tank?" Smart Oil Gauge: "You have exactly 68.4 gallons left." 3. This is the coolest part. Not only can I check the level from my couch (or from work), but the app also tracks my usage history. I can see exactly how many gallons I burn on a cold day versus a mild day. It helps immensely with budgeting and knowing exactly when to order oil. 4. Peace of Mind! The best feature is the programmable alerts. I have mine set to text/email me when the tank hits 1/4 full. No more waking up at 3 AM wondering if the burner kicked off because we ran dry. It might seem like a luxury, but considering the cost of an emergency prime-and-start service call if you run out of oil, this device pays for itself immediately. It’s well-built, the app is polished, and it just works. Highly recommended!

If you use heating oil I would highly recommend this. It provides you very accurate insight into your oil levels and you can set a notification of when you want to be notified of the level on the mobile app. I also found an integration for home assistant though it's not as integrated as I would like. The setup and connection was very easy. I've had this since October 2025 and battery is still going strong. To install it I just asked a technician that maintains our boiler to borrow his pipe wrench which he was happy to do so. Very easy to install.

I have an above ground 275 gallon home heating oil tank on the side of my house. Not trusting the float gauge I would tap the side of the tank to get an idea of the level. I had always wanted to get an oil level sensor and gave the Smart Oil Gauge Duo a shot. I’ve had it installed for 1 year and 5 months at the time of this review so have a good amount of time with it. I wouldn’t hesitate in recommending this oil level gauge. Keep in mind you do not get measurements in real time. The sensor takes a measurement every hour and stores it in its memory. The sensor then uploads the reading based on the frequency you set in the app. In my case I selected 6 hour increments. Essentially every 6 hours the app shows the previous 6 hours. Installation of the gauge was no problem. Simple plumbing connections, just make sure you use a pipe tape or sealant that is compatible with fuel oil. Once installed everything was straightforward. You can see the oil level in a bar chart, over the last day/week/month/year and the consumption over those same intervals. The app is ok but you can only see the data in the default time scale, can’t zoom in or customize the display. I let the oil burner run out of oil to figure out how many gallons of oil was remaining in the tank at “empty”. I then added 5 gallons of diesel to get by until the home heating oil was delivered. Smart Oil detected the fill up and thought I got 202.1 gallons, the actual delivery was 202.7 gallons. Couldn’t have asked for better accuracy. One thing is that my tank is in direct sunlight. As the tank heats up the level artificially changes (only by a gallon or so) but the nightly readings have been correct. Attached are a few screenshots of the app. It’s nice that you can see the oil tank level over the year and see the consumption over the winter vs summer. The app also estimates how long until the tank reaches 1/4 and 1/8 so you have an idea of how long before you need to get an oil delivery. You can also set up alerts and reminders so you never run out. Overall this gauge is great and would highly recommend it to anyone with an oil tank.

Cool product. However, it has a major flaw. Every single day I get a notification saying that I received an oil delivery and that my tank is full. According to their support people, this is due to my tank being outside and temperature changes causing condensation on the sensor. They suggest I wipe off the condensation with a piece of cloth. But what happens when it builds up again? It’s a nice idea but needs help. Due to the constant “ghost refills” all statistical data and information is useless. Also, it was a major pain to configure the WiFi. I had to just keep trying until it worked. 1,357 tries later.

The app seems to work very well once set up, but setting it up was a bit of a pain. Had several issues trying to get it to connect. Eventually got it. It seems to be accurate and is easy to read. Love the notifications, as well. I just wish it had been a bit easier to get set up.

After running out of fuel oil this past winter, I decided to install a better fuel gauge. I researched what was available and decide to order the Smart Gauge Duo. I'm very satisfied with this product. It is very well made and works as expected. I can now see my true fuel oil level and get notifications when I need to order more. It was very easy to set up and start using. The biggest issue I encountered was removing the old oil tank filler plug so the new gauge could be installed. Also, make sure to confirm your install when you received the email or you won't get a reading.

The Smart Oil Gauge Duo is perfect for vaction homes and where or when the tank may not be easily accessed. it connects to your wifi and the free app on your phone allows you to determine the fuel level of the tanke from anywhere in the worled with internet access. The DUO the only version rated for use on tanks located outdoors. It is more accurate and has a broader range of measurement than the non-duo version (which is not suitable for outdoor installation - but may be a nice, lower cost option for an indoor tank). Both the Duo and non-Duo support most popular tanks sizes from 275 to 550 gallon capacity in either a vertical or horizontal configuration. Easy to install with included clear, concise instructions. A pipe wrench or channel lock pliers are the only tools needed for installation.
