Classic intermediate reader
I appreciated the intentional repetition of key vocabulary. I could sense my reading speed pick up as I anticipated words and phrases. I stayed engaged in the story, which motivated me to continue to pick up the book. Will re-read again soon to see how much I can improve my speed and comprehension the second time around.

Great book
This is a great book to help you move forward in your chinese. I would say the level is around hsk3. The story is simple but engaging.

A great graded reader and a good story
It's another excellent graded reader from Mandarin Companion. Very well done as a graded reader and also a nice story to read.

This is a great book like all in this series
This is a great book like all in this series, it changes the original story and sets it in China. I have not read, nor know anything about the original story. I can only say that the story moves at a fast past keeping lots of details of what I would assume came from the original.

Awkward sentence structures, butchers Austen’s characters.
I’ve read several other books in the mandarin graded readers series, and in general I’ve found them all to be a delightful way to improve my reading comprehension. But this book did not live up to expectations. First of all, the story was rather painful to get through, mostly because this adaptation sucks the complexity out of the original characters. That’s not surprising for an adaptation this abbreviated, but for a character-driven novel, it’s rough going when the characters are all one-dimensional. What’s more frustrating is that the vocab level in this book is pretty off: lots of common, HSK 1-level words and phrases are defined in the vocab section at the back of the book while less frequently used phrases are left undefined. I also ran a few passages by a native Mandarin speaker who told me that the writing in this book didn’t feel very natural. So if you’re looking for a way to practice your reading, this book will do the trick, but I’d definitely recommend starting with some of the other books in the series; I didn’t have any of these complaints about Sherlock Holmes or The Secret Garden.

The story wasn't my cup of tea but it definitely kept things interesting and moved pretty quickly. I'm glad I read it and I feel it improved my Chinese reading comprehension which is extremely important to me. The book is written well, has some interesting love triangles, a few drama bombs, and introduces words in a refreshing way that doesn't feel repetitive. If relationship drama isn't on your list of things you find interesting maybe check out some other books from the series like the Sixty year dream or The country of the blind. All in all, I feel like I learned things from this book and that's very valuable to me. :-)

I really enjoyed being able to read a Mandarin book - albeit one with 300 characters. I buy the argument in the introduction that being able to do so helps develop Chinese skills.

Five Stars
Really excellent book. The first novel I have read in Chinese simplified characters.

Good entry level reader
The characters are a good size and easy to read. I am disappointed that the audio has to be purchased separately through audible that charges a monthly fee. I would like to be able to purchase the audio in an MP3 and be able to use on any device without having to go through an APP or stream.
