Easy listening Folk Rock, But listening means there will be things to get you thinking.
Paul Simon may be, as other’s claim, America’s Troubadour. Since the 1960’s he has been mine. I do not believe he has ever sung directly to me, but his lyrics often speak to me. His lyrics have been the turn to poetry of my moods. There Goes Rhymin’ Simon is new to my effort to collect’em all and is a happy addition. The number of us who can even guess what Kodachrome was may dwindle. But too many of us also think back on all the carp learned in High School. Making this song an anthem to too many of us. To many of us males anyway. In fact much of this CD is male oriented. But then Paul by this time was working alone and he never pretended to sing from any other POV.The happy sad Take Me to the Mardi Gras catches the wistful spirit that lurks under every party, never mind how outrageous Mardi Gras is.The musical spirit if this collection is folk rock. These are mostly mellow and loving ballads at home in apartment houses and family bed time. There is enough jazz to keep it lively and always the threat of a bite. St Judy’s Comet may be just right as a lullaby, but there is something beyond the words in: It was a Sunny Day. There are important lessons in One Man’s Ceiling (is Another Man’s Floor) and in Learn how to Fall. Something so Right and Let me Live in Your City are likely songs for a new bride’s first dance. Tenderness however is too complex for all its simplicity. There Goes Rhymin’ Simon is not his most polished or his most sophisticated. It is good listening rewarding the listener with reasons to pay attention.

A masterpiece by a true pop music master.
Paul Simon is an icon. With Art Garfunkel and without him, he's responsible for some of the most substantial pop music of the latter half of the 20th century. But I consider this album his best. The song American Tune is even more meaningful now than ever while "Loves Me Like Rock" is just pure joy. Lyrics such as these from "Tenderness": "Honesty, it's such a waste of energy. No, you don't have to lie to me, just give me some tenderness beneath your honesty" is as wise as anything appearing in pop music and the build up at the end of Take Me to the Mardi Gras (similar in effect to that at the end of Janis Joplin's "Me and Bobby McGee") is masterful. For my money, this is one of the 25 best albums of all time.
