The Chieftain is a solid beautiful razor that is made of quality materials and has been engineered for perfection. I waited to provide my review until I got a few shaves under my belt to provide a better assessment of the performance of this razor. I will brake my review into sub-parts to discuss the different aspects of the razor itself and it's performance. Build quality: 5 stars The Chieftain Odin Edition is a quality safety razor. It is hearty but not crazy heavy with a great balance to it. The butterfly doors operate smoothly and the blade slides in and is ready to go immediately. One of the best things about the razor is that it completely covers the blade unlike any other razor I have used before. This is a great aspect of the razor as it allows you to hold the sides of the razor comfortably and there is minimal chance of being cut accidentally and it helps avoid nicking the ear lobe. The big consideration with the Odin model is the rose gold plating. I think it look great but it does require more maintenance to maintain the look. Ultimately you just have to clean the razor well with water after the shave and dry it off. This is stated in there description as well as all literature that comes with the razor. In the end this would not change the shave you get just the look of the razor if you don't follow the directions. Packaging: 5 stars The packaging is slick and feels very high class. You can find a lot of similar looking razors on the market and there is a lot of miss information about Viking Blade out there but if you buy from them you are getting the real deal. Besides what I said under the build quality the packaging is some of the best. It comes in a magnetic latch box with a mirror and plenty of space to store extra blades for when you need to travel. The higher price of the Vikings Blade makes more sense when you see the care and dedication they put into their product. The Shave: 5 stars I have shaved with the Chieftain several times now and all I can say is wow! My initial shave came after being away from safety razors for a bit and I will admit it was not the best shave ever. While discouraging I felt I really needed to get more practice in before I could fully blame the razor. Sure enough the next shave was a completely different experience. Using Gillette Silver Blues I did a two pass shave with CRSW shaving soap. The big key is of course no pressure and keeping your angle. This is where I failed during my first shave as I felt like I could not get the angle correctly to actually get the blade to cut. As a result it was either doing nothing or a little too much if you get my drift. The second shave I was more focused in and once I found the angle it was not lost again. The shave was smooth and relaxing with practically no irritation at all. After one pass I had substantial beard reduction but needed a second pass to really get smooth. What was left was a couple of spot clean ups as I have some weird growth areas on my neck but it got them all. I have never been able to get a full bbs shave but this got me as close as I ever have. The Chieftain is a bit more on the mild side so my silver blues work nicely as they get toned down a bit vs when they are in my Gillette Old Type. As a beginner I would highly recommend the Chieftain but would maybe get the chrome one to avoid the extra care needed to maintain the razor. Once you get good you could always "upgrade" to it and continue to get the great shave the Chieftain provides. This is a quality razor that I would highly recommend for those looking for a new daily driver or to get out of using your 5 bladed ingrown hair maker razors. With some nice shave soap or cream this will give you a dream shave and leave your skin happy and healthy.

Been using this razor for 2 months now. I was stunned with how good looking this razor is in person. it feels well made and has nice heft to it. It opens and closes nicely. Overall .. its nice to use nice things and this is really nice. It feels and looks quality The design leaves less razor exposed than the BamBaw I had been using. What it meant for me was a safer faster shave as I did get a couple of nicks when using the BamBaw but none so far with the Viking. It just seems like an easier shave even though I was happy with the Bambaw. I used a straight razor for over 35 years so I am not new to using an open blade rather than a cartridge but am new to safety razors and can say .. this is a great razor for not only the experienced but beginners as it is very forgiving. I am sitting here with a silky smooth face. Overall .. I am thrilled with the razors looks, handling and shave. Now the razors .. I didnt want to snatch a star for the razors as it clearly says Mild on the razors that come with the handle but they did not work for me. I have been using the Astra for a while now and I can get up to 5 shaves from a blade but really couldnt get more than 1 out of the provided viking razor and I did find myself going over some areas more than once which can lead to irritation. I understand they sell different blades for different hair types and maybe they should include a sample pack if they want to sell blades because the provided ones were not for me at all. However .. for the price .. the handle is well worth it even if you throw the blades in the trash .. or .. maybe they work for you.

As I’m getting older in my mid 50’s; I’ve been exploring ways to enjoy the simple tasks in life. This razor is worth every single cent. It has a perfect balance and weight for shaving with a double safety razor. You literally only need 3 fingers on it to achieve a perfect shave. I’ve been using the English Taylor of Old Bond Street Sensitive shave cream, along with a boars brush bristle, and a small plastic bowl to shave with. After a hot face wash (NO scrub gels or such, just an old-fashioned wash); I take a thumbnail-sized amount of shave cream, put it in my cheap little bowl, heat up my brush under hot water, lather that up in the bowl and proceed to shave, using short strokes, rinsing after each stroke, and end up with a perfectly smooth skin surface. Even the blades which come with the razor are superlative, I bought the 50 count refill from them a few days later. Far less expensive than the (cassette) razors, less waste, better for the environment (no plastic to throw away); and far higher quality end result than a refill razor. I would be remiss if I didn’t point out, however, that I have the worst combination of skin, as I have course beard hairs but very sensitive skin, and I am ecstatic to find a product like this. Yes, it requires a little more maintenance as you should dry the razor and blade, but it soon becomes a ritual that is actually very relaxing, almost a Zen feeling. I can’t recommend this thing enough. If you’re still reading this, buy it already.

I'm not sure where I heard about this Viking Chieftain, but I gave it a try and I'm glad I did. I've used a Merkur Progress Adjustable for over 10 years (it's a great razor), and I thought it would be interesting to try another. The Chieftain (Chromium Silver) gives a very nice shave with Astra blades, and I've ended up putting away my other razor for the time being. Pros: Very nicely made, chrome is heavy, mechanism is well crafted Doesn't easily nick the skin, yet provides a very close shave No razor burn even after multiple passes (with proper technique) Balanced - feels good in the hand A few cons though: The handle feels a bit slick for some reason, though it has never slipped The butterfly mechanism is a bit harder to clean than more simple 2-piece designs The end used to tighten the razor down seems to loosen easily - it would be nice if it locked a bit more tightly So far, this seems like a great razor for both beginners and experienced users - pretty foolproof. I would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone looking for a very nice butterfly-style razor. For beginners: Shaving with a safety razor is a bit of a skill, but it's a very cool one. It also saves a ton of money. You can buy years worth of blades for a few dollars. I reuse blades for a week or two before swapping them out, but they're inexpensive enough to allow a new one each day. Below is my pared-down process. You don't have to spend 20 minutes shaving with this thing unless you want to! - Fill the basin with hot water while wetting your beard - I just pat my face with water from the basin - Slightly dip the brush into the water and create a bit of lather in your shaving bowl and lather your face - Shave with the lay of your beard. If you don't know the direction of your hair growth, spend some time figuring it out so that you won't end up with a lot of razor burn. This is IMPORTANT especially if your beard hair is coarse! - Shave a second time. I don't bother going for a perfect shave the first time. Two quick shaves are fast and easy. So just re-lather and repeat. - Wipe off your face, clean the razor and brush, and you're done. It should take about five minutes to complete. There seem to be many who turn shaving into a long process of soaking the beard with a warm damp towel, putting on some kind of pre-shave oils, on and on.... If you have the time and like that stuff - go ahead, but if you don't have time for frills and have to get to work, you can still use a safety razor to shave in the morning. Enjoy this razor and have fun!

I've been an an electric razor user for years. I started out with DE shaving while still in High school. However, I quickly abandoned it because: 1.) No one ever showed me the proper process involved. My father always told me that a safety razor was the best shave on the planet. But pop never showed me how. I guess he figured I'd just pick it up through trial and error. 2.) Cartridge blades and foam/gels/shaving creams became the latest marketing craze. After trying those many different cartridge blades, and being disappointed in performance (not to mention the high cost), I moved to an electric razor. Electric razors gave me an okay shave, but after a month or so of use, I've found that all electric razors just drop in performance and cutting precision. Electric razors leave behind stray hairs or miss hairs. Routinely, I'd notice a hair a tad longer than the others that the razor had missed. After hundreds of dollars in buying electric razors, and never really getting as close a shave as I wanted, a really amazing thing happened. I was cleaning out the bathroom cabinets and I came across an old box. I opened the box and inside was my late father's original safety razor from 1957. It's as if he was reaching from the great beyond to tell me to switch to DE shaving! Seriously, I was hit with the realization that, after all these years, I've been shaving incorrectly. In looking at dad's old safety razor, it's as if he was saying, "Welcome home, my son, to REAL shaving!" I cleaned up pop's razor and put it aside. I didn't plan on using it because I wasn't sure how aggressive a razor it might be. If I was going to get back into DE shaving, I needed something brand new with precision craftsmanship. I wanted a razor that would ensure a nick free and comfortable shave. And I wanted a razor that would last me as long as dad's original razor lasted him. I came to amazon and started my search. Last thing he wanted was to cut himself from loading a razor blade. The butterfly head solves this. No fumbling around with three pieces of a razor and a blade. Just twist open, pop in the blade, twist close, and get to shaving. -A travel case, mirror, and five blades! The presentation of the razor in the travel case is impeccable. Top notch! And it allows you to easily take the razor and spare blades with you on your travels. The spare blades rest comfortably just underneath the razor. Very convenient! -Good weight and balance. This razor has a wonderful heft and balance. It's superior to dad's old razor. The VIKINGS BLADE razor just "feels right" in the hand. -Price. This razor is an unbelievable value! This site: [...] rates the top ten safety razors on the market today. The VIKINGS BLADE comes in second place and only behind a first place finisher priced at $260.00 (Razor, brush and stand). Okay, subtract the cost of the brush and stand, and you're still looking at a razor priced at $150.00 or more! Why? You can get the VIKINGS BLADE for under 35 bucks and it's rated at number two! However, based on price, performance, materials, and qualoity the VIKINGS BLADE is the NUMBER ONE pick! -Lifetime warranty! Proof that this razor will last as long as dad's razor, even longer! Now, this is only Part One of my review. Part Two, the actual use of the VIKINGS BLADE razor, will follow in the next few days. However, I'm confident the VIKINGS BLADE will prove to be a winner! The reason for this is that I'm still doing a bit of research into the proper use of a safety razor. This is a precision instrument that requires a proper approach. I liken it to golf. You don't grab a golf club and start wildly swinging away. No, you learn the proper technique. You learn to understand that the club does all the work in hitting and launching the ball. A smooth and easy swing makes for a nice, straight drive. I'm learning that the same is true with DE shaving. You don't grab the razor and start shaving. You really need to understand the technique. Here are a few tips I've picked up: -Don't press. Let the blade glide over the skin and do the work (just like the golf club). -Make sure you have a good lather on your face (and learn how to make a good later). -Remember to take short strokes and keep the blade at the proper 30 degree angle. -Change out blades when they start showing signs of dullness. The VIKINGS BLADE's butterfly head design makes this a snap! So, here' s my advice,especially if you're new to DE shaving. BUY the VIKINGS BLADE razor. It really is the one to get. While you wait for delivery, take to the internet and explore the thousands of articles and videos which will give you everything you need to know in the proper use of a safety razor. You, too, will be rewarded with a lifetime of great shaves that will keep you looking great and your wallet looking even greater! PART 2 - This morning I had the wonderful PLEASURE of using the VIKINGS BLADE razor for the very first time! And it really was a pleasure! No nicks, cuts, or razor burns! Amazing! And the feeling afterwards is exactly what all guys are yearning for. A clean-shaven face from a shave that's close, comfortable, and lasts throughout the day. It's downright invigorating! I especially like the built-in guards on all four corners of the razor that prevent the corners of a razor blade that would otherwise protrude through and nick you. This razor is nick proof! THAT is worth the price of admission, as they say! The razor has just the right weight and balance and this gives you precise control. It's the weight of the handle that naturally encourages you from pressing on the skin too hard. When you bring the razor to your face, it's a simple matter of lightly touching the skin (and lather) and letting the blade glide across your face. Again, short stokes are key. I'd imagine that this is going to be a bit of an adjustment for many who use plastic, disposable razors. These razors with plastic, hollowed out handles are so lightweight, the user tends to press more in order to make contact with the skin. Not so with the VIKINGS BLADE. A light touch is all that is needed. It's remarkable because this approach allows the blade to do all the work to cleanly cut away the hair. You only need a few ingredients in order to get a clean, close, comfortable shave. A good blade, a good lather, and most importantly, a great razor to pull it all together. The VIKINGS BLADE is that razor. Again follow these steps, especially if you're new to DE shaving: 1.) Buy the VIKINGS BLADE razor NOW. 2.) While waiting for delivery, study the proper technique in using a safety razor. Watch youtube videos, read blog posts, etc. Become a student of how it's done correctly. Seriously, know this inside and out before you give yourself that first shave. I'd imagine that negative reviews regarding safety razors are due to the user not understanding the correct technique. They grab a razor and start hacking away and then complain about the negative experience. As I mentioned earlier, this is like golf. Let the club do all the work. But you really need to know how to use the instrument. So, really do your homework. It's not a difficult skill to learn and the VIKINGS BLADE makes it much more easy to make the transition to DE shaving. It's not a difficult skill, but learn to make a good lather. 4.) Shower first. If you can't shower, make sure your beard is good and wet. 5.) Use good quality razor blades. I was expecting a crime scene. Because that's what all the ads tell us, right? "Get this plastic cartridge with 9 blades that foams itself and you won't hurt your sensitive skin!" But I was getting fed up with cartridges: crazy expensive, popping off the razor body every time I dropped it while in the tub (oh, I don't know why I would drop a razor with wet, soapy hands), and, quite frankly, the quality of their shave has gotten worse over the past decade. But they were the modern thing to get, right? Safer? Cleaner? Wrong. Turns out, Grandma and Grandpa had the better technology with DE razors. DE, for you newbies, stands for "double-edged": the razor blade is sharp on both long sides, instead of the kind that has one thick, blunt long side that slides into holders like paint scrapers, etc. It also refers generally to "safety razors"--- the "safety" being the enclosure of 90% of the blade instead of a straight edge razor, which is basically a 7" Swiss Army knife. (Also cool, and I'm considering getting one for self-defense. Seriously, who would attack a woman holding one of those?!) Thoughts of home invasion aside, Viking has come up with a great DE razor in The Chieftain. After reading a random article online about how much money per year I could save by using normal razor blades (we'll see), I decided to get out of my razor rut. I didn't just run out and buy the first one that came up in Amazon, though: research was required. YouTube of course had instructional (not porn) videos of women using DE's and they did go through the whole "lather with badger brush" thing. Putting aside my childhood memories of my dad using the same, I realized that it was a little surprising that women didn't spend more time on shaving prep. I myself use five hair products alone and I'm fairly low maintenance, but apart from a single foray into "women's shave gel", my shaving routine was to grab the Dove and hack away. I've never had any complaints, but still, I never felt like I got a so-called close shave. That would change when I went with Viking. I picked The Chieftain because of the "butterfly" opening. To get the razor blade on, one twists the lowest part of the handle and the sleek contraption opens out like swinging double doors, revealing a rectangular post. The razor blades have holes in the middle, and you just drop the blade onto the post, it lies flat, and you re-twist the handle for the top of razor body to close over that 90% of the blade that I was talking about before. Viking's other razor option was the other standard DE razor loading system: unscrew the top, take it off completely, drop the blade on the post, and screw the top back on. Eh, I liked the butterfly version better. So why Viking? Amazon has innumerable brands to choose from, and most were for half the price. Well, I picked Viking the old fashioned way: I read reviews. Lots of reviews. More reviews than I thought were possible to have about razors. But it came down to this: apart from their every-so-slightly excessive bro-language (dude, the -NFL- is more gender-neutral), Viking had the best quality-to-cost ratio. And, if you didn't know before now, "women's" versions of traditionally men's products are always made more poorly and of crappier materials. (I don't know why: I didn't make this rule. Look up "Le Car" if you don't believe me.) Moving on, I went to a chain pharmacy and bought a brush/cup/soap kit while waiting the two days for my razor to arrive. I'm sure you can buy that stuff online, but I wanted to smell the soap first and I refuse to use Old Spice because, again, not my dad. I found something unobtrusive and anyway, I figured I could switch out soaps while keeping the rest of it. (I did wonder a. When would it all stop, and b. If I went back to using my old razor, could I use this cup to microwave soup or something? If all else failed, I could keep it for my son to use in a few years.) The razor came, I followed the videos, and...no Sweeney Todd. Just a great shave. A really great shave. An "I am SO not going back to plastic again!" kind of shave. I suppose that I should have led with the "great shave" part, but honestly, it wasn't difficult to use at all. You kind of intuit the angle. And no bloodshed. Wow. I now realize why there are so many plastic razor ads: it's hard to fear such a simple, handy razor as The Chieftain. It's not crazy-heavy, it's classically designed, and it gives a great shave. Okay, so yes, the blades they give you are "starter" blades---you're supposed to buy sharper ones after you familiarize yourself, but they're plenty sharp. (You should know that there are as many brands of blades as there are cars.) And a bigger point is that my legs, as long and sensitive as they are, are nowhere near as sensitive as a guy's face. Even with all that taken into consideration, The Chieftain is the overwhelmingly superior product. I'm hoping to see the money I spent on it be "returned" in less expensive upkeep, but even if it isn't, I would still recommend making the switch. If you need it said to you in manly-man-speak, women will definitely be impressed by seeing it (The Chieftain) in your bathroom. And with your shave, too. Finally, let me state that I have not been paid for this review, nor do I work for Viking, a blade manufacturer or any ad agency. This is just me expounding on a product that I never expected to buy because of its "danger." Shave proud, people.

BY ODIN'S BEARD! THIS RAZOR IS GLORIOUS! Just got my Limited edition "Odin" version of The Chieftain razor in today. It was my first experience with a safety razor. Ive been using cartridge razors all of my adult life. I had no idea what I was missing out on! I read some enlightening literature on safety razors and their superior shave quality over cartridge/disposable razors and it piqued my interest. I also got tired of the ludicrous prices that companies charge for replacement cartridges, so I decided to take the plunge! I came across Vikings Blade here on Amazon and their Chieftain model immediately caught my eye. I was instantly taken aback to my childhood. My Great Grandfather used a safety razor that was VERY similar looking to it. Its the only razor I ever saw him use! I remember sitting in the bathroom and watching him shave with it many times. Upon opening the the box, I felt as if I had just gazed upon a timeless dwarven treasure! As I firmly grasped its handle and lifted the wieldy blade from its cradle, this mere mortal felt unworthy to bask in its magnificent presence. A piece of craftsmanship that would make the Sons of Ivaldi or even Eitri and Brokker burn with jealousy and envy after marveling in its glorious perfection! The razor of my Great Grandfather was not able to be passed down unto me, due to its tragic destruction during the Ragnarok. However, I feel that this razor shall be passed on for generations, lest a jealous god come and take it from this mortal's cold, dead hands and claim it for their own first ! All humor aside, this blade has truly impressed me! I had to do a double-take in the mirror as I began to take my first strokes because the shave was so damn smooth that I could not believe my eyes! I shouted aloud to my wife "What manner of sorcery is this?!". If I hadn't seen the hair missing from my face, I would have thought that, in my cautious first approach, I didn't angle the blade enough to cut any hair off! It glided across my skin and effortlessly cut through my semi-coarse facial hair, leaving nothing but baby-smooth skin behind. It was the closest shave I've ever experienced No tugging, no pulling, just smooth sailing for this Viking ship. ;-) I bought a pack of the Vikings Blade brand Super Blades too, not realizing that the razor does come with 5 of them already to use. Their blades are considered to be less aggressive than the popular Astra or Feather brand blades that VB recommends for safety razor veterans and people with coarse facial hair. However, the shave their blades provided me was fantastic! Supposedly I haven't released the Odin's full potential with these blades, so mayhaps I'll have to try some of those in the future once Im accustomed to wielding these already impressive blades! Seriously, this thing simply radiates quality. The pictures don't even do it justice. Once you see it with your own eyes and feel it in your hands, all will make sense. If you've never used a safety razor before, just do a little research on the different types of blades, techniques and skin preparation products beforehand and I'm confident you'll experience a superior shave over any cartridge razor out there! UPDATE: Flight of The Valkyrie! I got my wife interested in converting to a safety razor as well. Before picking up another handle, she tried mine with one of the "mild" blades and absolutely loved it! She said they were perfect for shaving her legs. Now she doesn't want to go back to cartridge razors either! So it looks like we'll be buying a long handle safety razor soon too!

My first safety razor experience with the Odin has been awesome. Weight and grip is nice. It's apparently a medium aggression, which is working well for me. I have thick hairs and am prone to ingrown hairs with cartridges. So far I have no nicks with this even when using the sharpest blades in the sample pack. I prefer them actually. Got the hang of it within a week. Just got to have a healthy respect for the blade but not fear.

A good product ..well made .. well balanced. Bought another for travelling!!!

Good size and grip. Solid handle but not too heavy. It does a great job. Loading and replacing the blades are a breeze. I’m happy with my purchase.

Received this razor this week.It is a nice looking and well finished razor,has a good weight. Blades it comes with are too mild for me so after a couple of times I tried ied with an Astro blade this worked a lot better.The razor is very mild so anyone just starting to use single blade razors this is an ideal starter.For more experience it is still a great good looking razor but needs a more aggressive blade. I would suggest to the people at Viking that instead of 5 mild Viking blades that they replace a couple with their more aggressive blades.Have now been using this razor for a long time with various blades and I can only say this is a fantastic razor purchase one you will never regret buying it
