I've been following Ben Eater's 6502 homebrew computer videos during the pandemic. On occasion, he will whip out his HP-16C to show some hex calculation. I was not aware of this bit of computing curios, and was quite bummed to find prices for used units approaching 400.00 USD. To my delight, I discovered SwissMicros recreation and decided that it might make a good addition to my hobbyist tool bag. This was a good decision. The build quality is excellent, the serial console access is super cool, and following along the tutorials in the original HP-16C manual has been enjoyable. Anyone who enjoys hacking on 8 or 16-bit processors would likely dig this machine. Like the original, it's very obvious that this calculator was a labor of love. It's exceedingly rare to see that in the electronics space these days. Kudos, SwissMicros.

Faithful or better quality than the original. Feels more solid and durable. Keys are flat design without slanted second function panel, but are very legible. The keyboard has excellent click and feel. Overall it is at least equal to my original HP-12C in quality, and better than my new version HP-15C. Surpasses my already high expectations from two previously purchased calculators from SwissMicros.

If you were wishing you could get a replacement for your original HP, look no further. These Swiss Micros calculators are great! The are well made and are an accurate replica of the original HP calculators. Well worth the money! I've bought 3 of these HP clones and am rather impressed with their quality and sturdy design.

The world is a better place that someone is out there making these calculators. It just feels so nice to use. Doing hex / binary conversions was never so much fun. Love went into this product.

Love this calculator and love the modern day touches like real time clock and 48mhz cpu. This is nice because the display updates lightning fast and there's no "flicker" when calculating or switching between bases. Not super important features but they are nice.The reason I'm docking a star is with mine the internal button domes are really stiff and I'm not really a big fan of the way they do the buttons in general. I'd much rather have some sortof moulded buttons that slot in rather then it be one whole piece of flexy plastic with cutouts to allow the buttons to move. This might add a little thickness to the package but I'd take that myself. It's not a huge problem but it would be nice to see Swiss Micros improve a great product and make it perfect. That would be a huge redesign though. At the very least though I think the dome switches should be made softer somehow. Maybe it's already changed I believe mine's a bit older ~SN00600Also another small design issue is I believe the way the top half and the bottom half screw together they are very very very slightly off in their positions and it causes the plastic top half to bow towards the middle ever so slightly. EDIT: This isn't actually caused by screws positioning it's caused by a piece of foam on the inside that's just slightly too thick that it causes the middle to bow a little.Anyway you can't go wrong with this and honestly with the prices Hp16c's are going for this is a steal.

Until newer versions obsoleted it, I had been using a virtual HP-16. To have a new one, physical and made of modern electronics and materials is very awesome and a joyous luxury. It is well made and supported, and fulfills my need for a purpose built RPN computer science calculator.

Well made, received quickly considering importation from Switzerland. Every bit as great as its inspiration: the HP-16C ... and it has a USB port! Perhaps the only nearly insignificant ding is the use of flat keys as opposed to those HP sculpted keys, the HP key version was easier to see. On the other hand, the HP device was at mortal risk just from a battery change. This device is the best of both worlds.

Superb build quality with nice buttons. The buttons click down but softly unlike those of the DM42 and are quieter.The functionality is rather specialised and most users won't know what to do with it, but as an assembly programmer this will be a very valuable tool to me in my future projects.The only nitpicks I have are the use of a dot-matrix display and the keypad printing. While the dot-matrix display enables functionality that the original calculator never had (like switching fonts, setting time/date, etc), no 7-segment font emulation will ever look like the real thing and it looks quite different from my HP 12c platinum.The keypad printing, while fortunately not crooked like that on my DM42, is not as sharp as I'd liked. But just like with the DM42, I bought this device for functionality and not appearance. Check the photo and see for yourself if it bothers you before purchasing.
