Knowing how to make your surfaces and textures look real is one of the most challenging aspects of creating art in colored pencil, even for experienced artists. 101 Textures in Colored Pencil provides artists with step-by-step instructions for drawing a wide variety of the most common textures and surfaces, including sand, water, metals, foliage, wood, fabrics, stone, grass, hair, and many more. To get you started, this comprehensive guide opens with a review of tools and materials as well as basic skills , such as strokes, effects, and color mixing. Each page of instruction is a comprehensive resource on how to create a specific texture , complete with two to three easy-to-follow steps and a final, detailed image of the finished artwork. Plus, the book is organized into sections based on subject matter, so you can easily find the specific texture you're looking for. An artist's gallery in the back of the book provides examples of the textures in completed works of art. Review: Super helpful! - I'm an adult coloring book junkie, always on the hunt for a way to improve my skill set...no pressure, just like seeing my pages get "better." This book is fabulous for creating depth, dimension and texture with your color pencils. And you don't have to use Prismas or Polys to get good results. I've been stepping outside my "P" box and using some other brands of less expensive pencils: Castle, Kalour, Black Widows, Goldfarber and my favorite, Arteza. And my results have been pretty darn good. Each technique is fully explained and illustrated (in color) and there is everything from fur to glass included. This book has helped me add interest (and more fun) to those coloring pages with large, kind of "empty" objects and blah backgrounds without having to use markers, which I have not mastered on coloring book paper...yet! Very happy with this purchase. Review: Fantastic resource! - I have recently started using colored pencils not just for adult coloring books, but also in my mixed media work. This book has been a game changer! It is laid out very nicely with tools and tricks for artists in the front, and then by section for animal fur, skin, plants etc. Each texture detail spells out in 4 basic steps how to achieve realism, and the colored pictures and pencil color suggestions are great! And just like that- Bammm! I’m a better artist!! For someone like me that cannot afford to take multiple art classes, this book is perfect. It’s a great course bundled up in one easy to follow reference book. I have had it only a short time, but find myself using it a lot. One nice thing about this book is the refresher course on color theory, and how something like obtaining a deeper red color is not necessarily done by just layering on more red. I think this book is a very valuable tool for anyone that likes working with colored pencils and thanks to Denise for sharing her knowledge with the rest of us!

Very useful, very convenient for travel and reference!
This book are a medium size, I compare the size of this book with the Colored Pencil Bible by Alyona Nickelson, and you can see the difference between both. It's convenient for travel, I really like it, because it goes to the point, and it gives you many examples to give textures with colored pencils! It has many practical tips and also shows a brief introduction to the materials, and other interesting things. I recomended at 100%!

It has good information but not enough
This is a great little book, but it could have been better. The main reason I gave it five stars is because most of the books out there do not have a how to do page by subjects. The pictures are great but would have liked to see drawings ( step by step), especially on eyes and lips etc. on all ethic people besides white people. After all there are a lot of people out there in the world : Black, Spanish, Chinese, Korean, etc. What you use to color a white person in coloring wouldn't be the same on a black person. It was just what I was looking for in the other three books I bought. My only dilemma is that I wish it had more pages on the subject. The topics are on how to color: people, smooth skin, aged skin, straight, wavy, curly hair etc. Basically only one page per topic. And you know it takes more than one page perhaps that's why the book is small in size as well. There are many topics broken down by sections like animals and insects, fabric and textiles , glass, stone, ceramics, wood and metal, food and beverage, and nature.Sometimes a drawing is better than a picture when your trying to learn how to color; especially in a coloring book.

Decent
Pros: *great resource for coloring or drawing different items *can be used as a reference when you need ideas on to color sonething *organized well - easy to flip through and find what you're looking for *some of the metals and woods are pretty cool. * The Nature stuff, like stones and water, will come in handy *nice artwork at the end of the book *decent value Cons: *some items could use more than 4 steps to illustrate, like hair which can be hard to color. *Wish there were more and larger illustrations. *wish there were more facial parts done at different angles. *also wish there were complete portraits at the end of the section so we could see what a finish face looks like *wish there were finished examples of clothing on people to see how the fabric drapes on the human form. *some items I doubt I'll ever color, like the baguette or stained glass *adheres to the format rigidly, sometimes sacrificing understanding *Needs more and different flowers instead of just one (seriously, get rid of the baguette stuff and add more flowers or faces!)

Great for beginners and Prismacolor lovers
I am a beginner. I am happy to get this book. To understand colors, blending, workability, how to get details etc., and most importantly how patience can give extraordinary results🙈 The only con is one need to have bigger set of Prismacolor pencils.

Love this book UPDATE
The author gives what I think is just the right amount of information on pencils, supplies and techniques. I find the photo quality excellent and the instructions easy to follow. I make coloured pencil art, and have struggled with certain textures; this book offers mini-tutorials on many that I always wanted to perfect. I will have fun working my way through those that interest me and think I'll be referring to it often in the future. Bonus: she offers down-loadable CP swatches on her website. Recommend this book for beginners to intermediate CP artists. UPDATE I've had this book for four months now, and have enjoyed working my way through many of the textures. I've found the instructions clear and my results are very pleasing.
