This brief introduction to memorizing Scripture starts out, fittingly, with a personal testimony by the author of his own experience of the surprising power of scripture memory to help deliver him from, and through, a time of great fear, a feeling of abandonment, and confusion, when he was a young teenager.That same Scripture freely and openly declares that there Is a Divine Person Who takes of His own infinite power and applies it, really and feelingly, to individual souls such as the author, just as he tells us happened to him in the opening paragraphs. Therefore it should come as no surprise to us that this power is available, and very real.But for most it is a surprise, and not real at all.Why is that? we might reasonably ask.The answer is that the same scripture that freely declares the availability of this power, also tells us that we all have three enemy’s which seek to hide from us the Means by which each of us may receive from The Spirit of God the power we need in every situation to triumph over our enemies, and thereby Glorify God.Those three enemies are: the world, ourselves, and the devil. And so the key is not to listen to our enemies, but rather to the scripture! Simple, but as our author points out we must learn to identify these distractions and avoid them.Scripture memorization is, perhaps, along with prayer and reading or listening to well thought out and carefully prepared sermons ( difficult, but not impossible, to find in an age of shallowness and apostasy) the primary means of appropriating Gods real and necessary power in our lives.The author wisely deals with a number of the ways in which the reader can overcome these enemies, within, and without, who never tire of trying to keep us from having this power!Why? Because they know how effective and useful that power is in defeating them.John Bunyan, one of Gods greatest servants and teachers of Gods Word is reported to have memorized so much of the Scripture that it was said figuratively that when cut he bled Gods Word.Because of this, and his knowledge and deep insight into the meaning of scripture, Bunyan advised that all Christians should learn to become aware of how the devil and his fallen angels tempted them through the mechanism of suggesting thoughts of doubt, despair and sinful practices and desires. And once they began to recognize these tempting thoughts to use them to speak truth back to the tempter. For example, if that tempter has had been suggesting to you as you read this that it is nonsense; a good reply would be: “Thanks for reminding me that you hate me, and scripture and God The Holy Spirit Who uses it to help me defeat you! Because of that, and the simple truth that memorization is a great blessing I will therefore be even more diligent in my efforts in this discipline.”There is nothing like memorization of scripture and prayerful meditation on it to help us in our pilgrimage through this world and for this reason I heartily recommend this excellent little book to all.
