Review: Hope, War, and the Strength to Keep Going - As Long as the Lemons Grow by Zoulfa Katouh is a deeply emotional and powerful novel that captures the human side of war and survival. Set during the Syrian conflict, the story follows Salama Kassab, a young pharmacy student whose life is completely transformed by the violence around her. As hospitals fill with the wounded and danger becomes a part of everyday life, Salama is forced to grow up quickly and make impossible choices. One of the most striking elements of the book is how it portrays trauma and inner conflict. Salama often imagines a voice in her head named Khawf (fear), representing her anxiety and survival instincts. This unique narrative device allows readers to truly feel her emotional strugglesโtorn between staying to help others and escaping to safety. The novel also explores themes of love, hope, and resilience. Even in the middle of destruction, moments of connection and kindness shine through. Salamaโs relationships, especially with Kenan, add warmth and humanity to an otherwise heartbreaking setting. These emotional layers make the story not just about war, but about what it means to stay human in inhumane conditions. What makes this book a great read is its authenticity and emotional depth. The author, being of Syrian origin, brings a sense of realism that makes the story feel raw and honest. The writing is simple yet powerful, making it accessible while still deeply moving. Overall, As Long as the Lemons Grow is a haunting yet hopeful novel. It reminds readers of the strength of the human spirit and the importance of holding on to hope, even in the darkest times. Nerve-racking but beautifully written book.
When we read a book, we often place ourselves inside its world. We imagine standing beside the characters, witnessing their conversations, their choices, their surroundings. It is one of the quietest forms of intimacy between a reader and a story. But with As Long As The Lemon Trees Grow, I found myself unable to do that. Not because the writing failed to transport me โ but because the reality it was portraying was almost too painful to inhabit. The Syrian conflict, which began after peaceful pro-democracy protests in 2011, has left behind unimaginable loss, displacement, and suffering. Reading about it through Salamaโs eyes made the scale of that devastation feel deeply personal. The grief, fear, anger, and helplessness I felt while reading this book are emotions I rarely experience so intensely through fiction. There are moments when the horrors described feel beyond imagination โ a reality where violence does not discriminate between age, gender, or circumstance. A reality where people who dared to hope for change were forced to pay unimaginable prices for that hope. As Long As The Lemon Trees Grow follows Salama, a teenager whose future was once centered around studying pharmacy, but whose life is abruptly transformed by war. In a country where hospitals have been destroyed and medical professionals have been killed or forced to flee, she finds herself becoming an underqualified doctor โ carrying responsibilities far beyond what anyone her age should have to bear. Salama is not only fighting the external destruction around her but also the internal consequences of trauma. Her hallucination, Khawf (ุฎูู โ fear), becomes the physical manifestation of her anxiety, guilt, and survival instinct. Through Khawf, she is forced to confront the impossible decision of whether to remain in Syria or escape, not only for herself but also for her sister-in-law, Layla. And then she meets Kenan. In the middle of devastation, their story becomes a reminder that even the most broken places can still hold moments of tenderness. Like a flower growing through cracks in concrete, hope can exist in spaces where it seems impossible. What I loved about this book: The greatest strength of this novel is Zoulfa Katouhโs ability to translate suffering into something deeply human. She does not reduce the Syrian people to their pain; she shows their love, dreams, humor, courage, and resilience alongside their trauma. The subject matter is incredibly heavy, yet the author handles it with remarkable sensitivity. The story feels immersive without feeling exploitative. It reads like fiction, but carries the emotional weight of real lives and real histories. The short story at the end was a beautiful addition โ a necessary reminder that after all the grief, there is still room for healing and hope. What could have been better: While Salamaโs family was explored beautifully, I found myself wishing for more insight into Kenanโs parents โ their personalities, their lives, and their experiences. Knowing more about them would have added another layer to his character and his story. I would recommend this book to anyone who appreciates historical fiction that does more than tell a story โ fiction that asks you to witness, to understand, and to remember. If you want a book that reaches beyond the page and leaves you carrying its emotions long after you finish, read this. As Long As The Lemon Trees Grow is a story about war, but more importantly, it is a story about humanity. And the people of Syria deserve to be remembered beyond their suffering.

schmerzhaft und wunderschรถn geschrieben
As Long As the Lemon Trees Grow ist ein Buch, das man nicht einfach liest, man fรผhlt es.
