This is a direct wired wall sconce. It can replace any wall mounted light that is controlled by a light switch. It is fairly bright, so may be a little overkill for a reading light but I think that is up to personal preference.

Can 2 of these light a whole room?

It would depend on the size of the room. I have 2 of them in my carport area and the work very well...they area is well illuminated
