It works wonders in my clay soil. Just be sure you have a firm grip on your drill and go slow. Otherwise it will twist your wrist if you encounter firmly embedded rocks. . I have to dig these out with a shovel or pick but it’s still easier than doing the same job with just a shovel.

I bought the 4 x 12 inch auger to mix dirt, compost and vermiculite for my potted plants. Our yard isn’t conducive for planting directly in the ground. I used to throw the dirt, compost and vermiculate onto a large tarp and mix it with a shovel. Now i put the mixture into a Big Tub found at our local ranch supply and mix it with the auger and transferred to my pots. It worked great. Now I bought the 3 x 12 to mix directly into some of my planters and try it for a few bulbs I need to transplant. the 3” may be a little larger than I need, but I want to use a bigger hole and add compost & dirt mixture in it since we have hard clay soil. This will save a lot of back breaking digging.

A drill auger is a game changer for planting in rocky soil. I was spending hours digging away to plant several hundred native grass plants on a hillside. The auger was easy to put on my drill and away I went! Good quality and I have definitely not hesitated ro tell my other gardening friends how mush they need this. Especially if you are planting bulbs and repetitive plantings.
